Chan Zuckerberg Initiative - Redwood City, CA
Apply NowJob Description
OverviewThe Chan Zuckerberg Initiative was founded by Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg in 2015 to help solve some of society’s toughest challenges — from eradicating disease and improving education to addressing the needs of our local communities. Our mission is to build a more inclusive, just, and healthy future for everyone. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, together with its Biohub Network, supports the science and technology that will enable scientists to cure, prevent, or manage diseases. We focus on fundamental research to better understand human biology and on developing tools and technology that move science forward to prevent disease and accelerate cures. To unlock the mysteries of cells and their interactions, we pursue four grand challenges: building an AI-based virtual cell model, developing novel imaging technologies, creating tools for sensing inflammation in real time, and harnessing the immune system for early disease detection, prevention, and treatment.Opportunity and Data EcosystemAt CZI, we generate unprecedented scientific datasets that drive biological modeling innovation:Billions of standardized cells of single-cell transcriptomic data10s of thousands of donor-matched DNA and RNA samplesPeta-scale static and dynamic imaging datasetsTerabytes-scale mass spectrometry datasetsDiverse, large multi-modal datasets enabling multi-modal model trainingData products are made available through public resources like CELLxGENE Discover and the CryoET Portal to support scientific discovery. Role: Senior Staff Data Scientist, ImagingAs a Senior Staff Data Scientist, you will lead the creation of groundbreaking imaging datasets that decode cellular function at the molecular level. You will define data needs, format standards, analysis approaches, quality metrics, and our technical strategy for systems to ingest, transform, validate, and deploy data products.Success means delivering high-quality, usable datasets that address modeling challenges and accelerate scientific progress. You will help build the data foundation to transform our understanding of human biology and move toward curing, preventing, and managing disease. What You’ll DoDefine the technical strategy for a robust imaging data ecosystem and build data ingestion pipelines, define data formats, write validation tools, QC metrics, and analysis pipelines.Collaborate with ML engineers, AI Researchers, and Data Engineers to iteratively evaluate, refine and grow datasets to maximize model performance.Discover and define new data generation opportunities and manage the delivery of those data products to our AI team.Collaborate with engineers, product managers, UX designers, and other data scientists to publish valuable datasets as part of CZI's open data ecosystem. What You’ll Bring10+ years of experience with large-scale biological imaging dataDemonstrated delivery of multiple large biological data productsExperience with big data: extraction, transport, loading, databases, standardization, validation, QC, and analysisExperience with processing and orchestration pipelines (e.g., Argo Workflows, Databricks)Strong fundamentals in statistical reasoning and machine learningExperience with biological data analysis and QC best practicesExcellent written and verbal communication skillsEnthusiasm to ramp up on technologies and learn new domainsExperience working in a multidisciplinary environment (engineering, product, AI Research) CompensationThe Redwood City, CA base pay range for a new hire in this role is $241,000 - $331,100.
