The School comprises over 125 primary appointed faculty and academics, 200 staff members, and 25 secondary appointed faculty, supporting 750+ BSPH undergraduates and 225+ postgraduates across six degree programs and a clinical residency. Research areas include Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Climate & Environmental Health, Community Health Services & Preventive Medicine, Epidemiology, Global Health, Health Behavior, Health Equity & Justice, Health Policy, Public Mental Health & Substance Use, and Technology & Precision Health, with approximately $255M in grants and contracts and five research service cores.Under the direction of the Assistant Business Officer and Associate Dean for Business Affairs, the Director of PI Portfolio Financial Management manages the daily operation, planning, coordination, and supervision of the School’s PI Portfolio fund management unit, overseeing over $55M annually and $255M total funding. PI portfolios include NIH, DOD, DOT, CDC, and other federally funded projects; state, foundation, industry, intramural, and other grants and contracts; training grants; clinical trials; service agreements; gifts and endowments; recharge cores; institutional funding; and other funds. The role supervises PI fund management staff, including a supervisor and pod leads, and ensures reporting and financial/administrative controls. Responsibilities include budget development and trend analysis, complex financial reporting, and coordination of the budget process for faculty, staff, academics, and student funding on PI funds. The role also serves as back-up for analysts and ensures ECERT compliance.Provide advice and guidance on complex policies and procedures for PIs, the School’s business office, and School leadership. Advise PIs, ABO, Associate/Assistant Deans for Research, Associate Dean for Business Affairs, and the Dean on sponsored project activity. Contribute to strategic planning within HWSPH, collaborate with FRST grant proposal support and other administrative teams, and participate in School Administration Office Leadership Team. Maintain relationships with financial administrators across the University and central offices.Responsibilities include receiving assignments as objectives, determining resource use to meet schedules and goals, reviewing and approving program recommendations, and guiding the team to achieve goals in alignment with policies. Erroneous decisions or failure to meet goals may result in increased costs and personnel implications.Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree in a related area and seven or more years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Expert knowledge of sponsored projects pre- and post-award processes and guidelines for Federal and non-Federal sponsors; advanced experience in NIH and biomedical funding, including multi-subaward and international subawards, training grants, and program/project grants.Advanced knowledge of grants and contracts transactions, financial systems, and compliance requirements; experience with various award mechanisms (grants, contracts, service agreements, subcontracts, cooperative agreements).Proven ability to plan, implement, and evaluate organizational change aligned with strategic goals.Experience in developing objectives, forecasting, budgeting, financial management, supervision, and audit/compliance.Demonstrated ability to negotiate mutually beneficial agreements.Knowledge of operational, personnel, and financial transactions related to administration of contracts and grants; experience managing a sponsored projects team in biomedical or related dependent work ability; excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; ability to multi-task in a high-volume environment; strong problem-solving, prioritization, and adaptability.Service orientation and strong management and leadership skills; experience in supervising sponsored projects staff, including hiring, training, performance management, and reviews.Proficiency with desktop/web applications and financial analysis tools; advanced Excel skills; familiarity with NIH eRA Commons, grants.gov, Proposal Central, and related platforms.Clear verbal and written communication with multiple stakeholders; strong interpersonal skills and professional written communication.Preferred QualificationsTen or more years of biomedical or related field sponsored projects administration experience.Experience with UCSD recharge core policies, rate reviews, and fiscal management.Knowledge of UCSD systems including Oracle, Kuali, UCPath, service agreements application, Health Sciences faculty compensation; familiarity with VA and IPAs/JPAs.Current UCSD employee; current or recent UC experience.Special ConditionsEmployment is subject to a criminal background check.Must be able to work varied hours and locations based on business needs; occasional evenings and weekends may be required.Pay TransparencyAnnual Full Pay Range: $108,100 - $204,900 (prorated if appointment percentage Hourly Equivalent: $51.77 - $98.13Factors in determining compensation include experience, skills, knowledge, and organizational needs.
