OverviewSFM – The Work Comp Experts is hiring a General Counsel-focused role supporting the Chief Legal Officer with complex transactional matters, corporate governance, and regulatory work across our multi-state operations. The role emphasizes transactional leadership, advisory services, and strategic collaboration on legal initiatives.What You'll DoLegal Advisory and Transactional Leadership: provide proactive, pragmatic legal advice to internal stakeholders on business law issues, including vendor relationships, employment law, litigation management and outside counsel oversight; develop and maintain internal guidance and policies.Draft, review and negotiate documents including service and vendor contracts, terms of use, data security and privacy policies, NDAs, and other corporate compliance materials.Provide legal support and strategic counsel on due diligence and integration processes related to potential acquisitions and corporate transactions.Public Policy and Regulatory SupportCollaborate on public policy initiatives and advocacy related to the company’s multi-state workers’ compensation footprint.Advise on insurance legal and regulatory developments impacting workers’ compensation law and insurers; help stakeholders stay compliant with changing laws.Represent SFM in industry groups and coalitions to provide leadership on legal issues affecting workers’ compensation and the broader insurance legal landscape.Corporate and Board Governance SupportCoordinate with the Chief Legal Officer on board governance matters and corporate secretary activities.Advise on entity management, corporate structure, and governance across SFM’s affiliated entities, including formation, maintenance and regulatory compliance for insurance and non-insurance entities.What We'll Love About YouEducation and ExperienceJuris Doctor degree from an accredited law school; licensed to practice law in Minnesota.Eight or more years of legal advisory experience in complex commercial contracts and corporate transactions, including M&A matters; experience in insurance or regulated industries is a plus.Knowledge and SkillsStrategic focus, strong organizational skills, and ability to manage diverse projects with evolving priorities.Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.Self-starter with a service-focused approach and a willingness to learn.Proficient in project leadership, contract management platforms, and legal technology; openness to AI applications for efficiency.Skilled negotiator balancing legal risk with business objectives.Willingness to travel periodically and a valid driver’s license.Able to work in the Bloomington office as needed.Physical RequirementsRegular attendance is required. The role involves working in an office or home office environment with standard office equipment. Physical duties include speaking and hearing, maintaining concentration, occasional lifting (approximately 25–35 pounds), and potential site work requiring protective equipment.
