OverviewKing County Metro Transit’s Rail Division has an exciting opportunity for a Rail Technical Trainer. As a member of the Rail Technical Trainer team, you will train the light rail workforce in King County. Rail Technical Trainers play a critical role in onboarding, training, and developing Rail employees and in supporting Rail’s Culture of Care and Operational Excellence strategic priorities.The Technical Training team is responsible for the development, implementation, and facilitation of training courses for a variety of trades and job classifications at Link Light Rail. Trainers typically focus on one or more of the following areas, including but not limited to:OperationsVehicle MaintenanceTrack & ROW MaintenancePowerSignalsSCADAFacilities MaintenanceBusiness and AdministrationOnboarding and General TrainingTrainers will typically receive cross-training in one or more areas that they may not be familiar with. Trainers instruct in both the classroom and in hands-on situations and evaluate student progress throughout the training program. They are also involved in coordinating with Rail management in the oversight of rail operations and maintenance work, to ensure that safety and quality of services are delivered according to our standards, best practices, and rules.We are currently seeking two (2) Technical Trainers:One (1) Technical Trainer who will focus on Operations Training, and who may be cross trained to provide a variety of training at Rail. This Trainer will facilitate Light Rail Operator training courses, retraining, and refreshers, along with other training responsibilities.One (1) Technical Trainer who will focus on Onboarding and General Training, and who may be cross-trained to provide a variety of training at Rail. This Trainer will facilitate general onboarding topics and courses, including De-Escalation and Right of Way training, essential training for new employees, and other training responsibilities.About Metro Transit's Expanding Rail DivisionKing County Metro Transit's Rail Division manages and maintains Sound Transit's Link light rail service and City of Seattle’s streetcar system. Link light rail currently spans a 33-mile route from SeaTac to Lynnwood and a 6.6-mile route from Redmond to South Bellevue. By the end of 2026, light rail is projected to expand to nearly 60 route miles, adding seven new stations. Additional expansions to the Link system will be coming online for years to come. Seattle Streetcar includes the 1.3 mile South Lake Union line and the 2.5 mile First Hill line, serving Seattle’s downtown core. These rail services complement Metro's extensive fixed-route bus system and mobility services. In this role, you will apply equity and social justice principles to all aspects of the work.Rail Technical Trainer ResponsibilitiesParticipate in all aspects of rail training, including but not limited to rail operations, maintenance, and facilities training programs.Support Rail’s strategic priorities of Culture of Care and Operational Excellence by delivering high-quality technical training to new and current employees.Onboard, support, and train diverse employees with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences.Develop, implement, and conduct training (curriculum, lesson plans, hands-on training and demonstration, training materials, and assessments) for rail employees and others as assigned, ensuring alignment with standards and requirements and safe operations, including: maintain up-to-date training content, prepare and maintain training aids and materials, ensure classroom space and equipment, conduct initial and refresher sessions, and deliver technical and compliance training as required.Assess learners, monitor progress, provide progress evaluations and performance counseling, and ensure trainee compliance with Link Light Rail governing documents and policies; recommend and implement supports or terminations as needed.Act as a designated examiner in testing and certification of rail vehicle operators and other rail positions.Maintain training documentation, including attendance, scores, completions, and other trainee information; adhere to record retention requirements; maintain reports and conduct data input and retrieval.Support emerging training needs of the division, including customized training, project-based training for other areas, evaluating equipment changes and incorporating them into curriculum, and participating in testing, certification, and opening of new rail extensions and new rail cars; participate in rail audits, emergency drills, and simulations.Maintain up-to-date knowledge of training processes, safety principles, Metro rules, policies, procedures, and applicable laws.Research and prepare technical and administrative reports to support division needs; operate rail vehicles and perform related duties as assigned.Minimum QualificationsExperience as a trainer and/or educator of adults AND two years of work experience in a transportation, transit, or industrial environment OR any equivalent combination of experience and education.Note: To be considered for the training position focusing on Operations training, applicants must also have at least one year of experience as a light rail operator.Desirable QualificationsStrong written and verbal communication skills.Experience developing, evaluating, and revising training materials.Experience developing policies, procedures, rules, and reports.Ability to organize work, set priorities, and meet deadlines.Knowledge of trainee assessment, performance evaluation, and providing feedback.Solving problems, analyzing, evaluating efficiency and quality, and recommending improvements.Ability to work effectively with a diverse population and apply equitable practices to training.Holds a Link Light Rail Mainline Rail Card and has been a qualified Link Light Rail operator for at least one year (for Operations training).Knowledge of or ability to learn applicable rail rules, regulations, and safety requirements; ability to learn database systems for training materials and records; ability to learn transportation operation and maintenance rules, policies and procedures, forms, and documentation requirements; and proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.Special RequirementsApplicants must possess a valid Washington state driver’s license (or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire).Ability to obtain and maintain a Link Rail Operator card (for Operations training).Working ConditionsAbility to climb stairs and board rail on elevated guide ways.Ability to sit for extended periods.Ability to lift or pull up to 30 pounds.Perform repetitive movements to operate equipment.Work independently with minimal breaks.Application & Selection ProcessApplications will be screened to determine minimum qualifications and responsiveness to instructions.
