OverviewChief Risk OfficerLos Angeles, California (100% on-site)The Chief Risk Officer (CRO) of CHLA is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership to the hospital in the assessment and mitigation of significant and developing enterprise risks. This pivotal leadership role is directly accountable for contributing to audit functions, business continuity, claims management, insurance, physical security, integrated risk management and all other active and emergent risks facing CHLA. The role requires a person who currently has a senior leadership role with enterprise-wide reach. The ideal candidate is currently leading or influencing a team of individuals with diverse talents and skills and has a proven record of ensuring optimal performance, collaboration and efficiency. The role requires a person who effectively leads other senior leaders across a large organization by influence and has current accountabilities for directing and delivering on enterprise-wide risk strategies in collaboration with other senior leaders. Experience in managing large-exposure, complex claims and understanding market and industry dynamics related to claims and overall enterprise risk is required. Extensive background in managing a large portfolio of insurance assets to ensure CHLA attains benefits from insurance contracts negotiated and paid for by CHLA. Current experience in analytical and data-driven approaches to risk management is required to evolve CHLA’s risk management functions. This position reports to the General Counsel and maintains key relationships with the board of directors, the executive leadership team, and all levels of leadership across CHLA. Key Responsibilities Manage and influence a talented, diverse team with responsibilities across identified areas, including recruitment, training, development, engagement and retention. Provide support, guidance, leadership and motivation to promote maximum performance and accountability across teams. Establish and execute a strategic framework for evaluating and mitigating risk-related issues across CHLA. Achieve optimal outcomes on enterprise risk issues facing CHLA. Educate and advise stakeholders across CHLA, including the board and the executive leadership team, on risk-related issues. Ensure independence and oversight for internal audit activities and high-level investigations, where appropriate. Create and develop analytic and innovation-driven strategies to address risk issues. Collaborate with the Office of the General Counsel to calibrate legal engagement and ensure proper approaches to mitigate risk. CRO leads the following areas and functions Risk Management: align risk strategies with organizational priorities; sustain ongoing risk assessment; communicate risk priorities to leaders; evaluate facility exposure and mitigate with business leaders; educate leadership and the board on risks and mitigation. CLAIMS MANAGEMENT: oversee claim investigation, reserving and resolution with a strategic lens on premiums, retention, costs of defense and settlement; coordinate with management and risk partners on CHLA claims approaches. Insurance Management: manage current insurance portfolio; maintain relationships with brokers; ensure CHLA obtains benefits of insurance contracts; maintain and recommend appropriate insurance products. Audit Management - Collaboration: support internal and external audit capabilities; develop audit framework and work plans; assess emerging risk issues. Business Continuity and Investigations: identify and mitigate enterprise-wide risks; plan proactively for threats; lead internal investigations with cross-leader calibration. Integrity and Compliance: partner with the chief compliance officer to ensure integrated risk management and ethical culture; ensure policies address risk-related issues; identify opportunities for mitigating risk based on compliance trends. Qualifications: senior leadership experience in healthcare, risk management, claims management, insurance and/or related areas; extensive experience with insurance products, laws and complex claims; strategic and operational leadership at a senior level; collaborative and data-driven approach; strong negotiation and communication skills; healthcare operations experience preferred. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience: Required: 10+ years’ risk management experience. Preferred: Pediatric nursing experience. Prior management experience. Education/Licensure/Certification: Required: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; JD and/or RN. Preferred: Advanced degree in healthcare or related field. CPHRM. Pay Scale USD $199,056.00 - USD $322,483.00 CHLA values the contribution each Team Member brings to our organization. Final determination of a successful candidate’s starting pay will vary based on factors such as education and experience. The pay scale listed is for candidates that meet the specified qualifications; additional pay may be determined for those exceeding them.
