All applicants are subject to a background check. Performs semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer utility lines and taps. Other duties as assigned. Applicants must possess the ability to perform heavy manual work for extended periods outdoors in varying climatic conditions. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, minimum age of 18 and a valid NC Class "C" driver's license. Conducts traffic control at jobsites; operates crew vehicle Installs water and sewer taps, services, and mains. Assists with loading the dump truck. Locates underground utilities. Assists in the repair of water main breaks. Assists in the installation and repair of water meters, hydrants, valve boxes, water valves, mains, and manholes. Performs jetting functions to clean lines. Performs building maintenance duties. Patches utility road cuts. Ability to operate a dewatering pump, tamp and various hand tools. Ability to operate a manual transmission vehicle Performs other related duties as assigned. High School Diploma or equivalent. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Crew leader assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. GUIDELINES: Guidelines include city ordinances, policies, and procedures, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties in the construction, maintenance and repair of a water distribution system. Work performed in inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position. SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to perform general maintenance duties in the installation, repair, and maintenance of the water distribution system. Success in this position provides for the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of the system. PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, and the general public. PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee in this position to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently/repeatedly required to stand; walk; use hands and exert forces needed to handle various types and sizes of tools, equipment and objects; reach with hands and arms and perform elevated work for periods of time; climb ladders and balance; climb into vehicles and equipment; stoop; kneel; half-kneel; squat; crouch; or crawl; and talk; or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift, push, pull and/or move more than 100 pounds. An employee in this position will have successfully passed a "Functional Prework Screen" administered by a professional and impartial third-party specialist. SAFETY SENSITIVE: This position has been identified as safety sensitive. The employee in this position will be part of a random drug testing pool. The methodology for choosing the random test subjects is handled by an outside, impartial, third-party vendor. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. The work may require the use of protective devices.
