This role ensures adherence to state and local tax laws, manages tax audits, and identifies tax savings opportunities. The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of U.S. indirect tax regulations, strong analytical skills, and experience working with tax automation systems.We are looking to speak to candidates who are based in Austin, New York City, or Palo Alto for our hybrid working model.ResponsibilitiesSales and Use Tax ComplianceEnsure timely and accurate preparation, filing, and payment of sales and use tax returns in all applicable jurisdictionsReview and reconcile monthly tax filings, payments, and journal entriesMaintain and manage exemption certificates and ensure proper applicationOversee the configuration and maintenance of tax rates in ERP/tax engine systems (e.g. Avalara)Develop and maintain documented procedures and internal controls for sales tax processesAudit ManagementAct as the primary point of contact for sales and use tax audits and inquiriesCompile documentation, respond to auditor information requests, and negotiate settlements where necessaryIdentify and mitigate audit risk through process improvements and proactive compliance strategiesTax Strategy and PlanningMonitor changes in sales tax laws, regulations, and court rulings affecting the businessRecommend and implement tax-efficient solutions and internal controls to reduce tax exposureMiscellaneous Business Taxes and Property Taxes ComplianceManage and review the filings of miscellaneous taxes such as business tax filings, property tax filings, business registrations, etcTeam LeadershipWork cross-functionally with Accounting, Sales, IT, finance, legal, and operations teams to ensure tax compliance is integrated into broader business processesSupervise and mentor tax staff as neededQualificationsBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MST preferred)8+ years of indirect tax experience, preferably in a multi-state environment or large corporationStrong understanding of U.S. sales and use tax laws, nexus rules, and taxabilityProficiency with tax software and ERP systems (e.g., Vertex, Avalara, SAP, Oracle, OneSource)Exceptional analytical, communication, and project management skillsDetail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlinesTo drive the personal growth and business impact of our employees, we’re committed to developing a supportive and enriching culture for everyone.
