Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) is seeking a Principal Configuration Design Engineer (Level 6) to support Airplane Configuration & Integration (AC&I) organization in BCA Product Development (PD) based in Long Beach, CA. In this role you will be part of a team that leads the design, development and integration of innovative, world-class commercial aerospace vehicles. You will collaborate with engineering leaders, customers and partners to lead multi-disciplinary engineering design teams. You will demonstrate a growth mindset, can-do attitude, versatility, flexibility and excellent communication and leadership skills. We are looking for senior airplane designers with a range of the following skills and abilities: Broad knowledge of airplane-level requirements and interrelated design conditions, and the ability to conceptually size and lay out market-leading commercial air vehicles Leadership in the preliminary design process – bringing multi-disciplinary design teams to optimized trade study decisions A resolute optimist, a visionary of new technologies and methods to continually advance the state of the art in commercial aviation Technical depth in various airplane design disciplines – a critical thinker knowledgeable about fundamentally sound airplane architectures Ability to quantitatively support technical conclusions through analytical data and develop new analytical tool capability when necessary Advocate of the airplane as a balanced market and technical solution Position Responsibilities Synthesizes conceptual/preliminary aerospace/aeronautical vehicles – proficiency in laying out integrated geometry and initial performance assessment/characteristics. Oversees creation of vehicle configuration designs from customer requirements. Leads multi-disciplinary optimization trade studies to assess design space and concept viability. Evaluates designs and leads trade studies to assess platform-level feasibility, risk, affordability, and competitiveness. Mentors and coaches others. Works independently. Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience) Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in Engineering. 20+ years of experience in airplane configuration design, systems engineering, or related aerospace engineering roles. Preferred Qualification (Desired Skills / Experience) Aeronautical/Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering degree. Expert knowledge of aircraft performance in one or more of the following areas: aerodynamics, stability and control, propulsion, structures, payloads or airplane systems. Expert knowledge of engineering design/analysis tools for early stage aircraft sizing and design.
