Position SummaryWalmart is accelerating its AI capabilities to transform retail at scale and we’re doing so responsibly. The Group Director, AI Governance will be the architect of Walmart’s AI governance strategy. This role ensures rapid innovation while maintaining trusted, ethical, and transparent use of AI across global operations. Governance Strategy & Policy Development Build a scalable AI/ML governance framework, including lifecycle oversight, risk classification, and ethical assessments. Create, maintain, and evolve AI governance policies and procedures covering fairness, explainability, bias, privacy, security, and regulatory compliance. Monitor global AI regulations and translate them into actionable internal policies. Risk Integration & Control Alignment Evaluate emerging AI/ML use cases and adapt governance frameworks for new risks, aligning with existing enterprise risk models. Partner with engineering, and product teams to embed governance into model review workflows. Governance Enablement & Culture Author charters, governance documentation, training programs, and enablement tools to help decentralized teams adopt governance guardrails confidently. Provide training and guidance to educate stakeholders about AI ethics, governance frameworks, and compliance. Execution Oversight & Technical Enablement Oversee technical integration and operationalization of governance processes, ensuring model deployment aligns with AI/ML lifecycle and risk protocols. Build monitoring systems for model performance, drift detection, and trigger escalation mechanisms for non-compliance or high-risk scenarios. Governance Reporting Maintain audit-ready trails, documentation, and time-stamped reports to support accountability. Define KPIs and report governance metrics to senior leadership. What you’ll bring… 10+ years in governance, risk management, policy, or compliance, preferably in AI/ML. Deep familiarity with AI/ML lifecycle, model risk in enterprise environments, and global regulatory regimes (EU AI Act, GDPR, NIST, CCPA). Proven ability to build and scale governance programs across large, matrixed enterprises. Strong strategic communication skills, capable of influencing tech, product, legal, and design leaders. Demonstrated commitment to ethical frameworks, fairness, and transparency. Preferred Qualifications Governance-related tech enablement. Prior roles in AI governance, risk, or policy. Participation in external AI ethics consortia or advisory groups. Background in legal, audit, or compliance related to AI systems. San Bruno, California US-08848: The annual salary range for this position is $208,000.00-$416,000.00. Bentonville, Arkansas US-30099: The annual salary range for this position is $160,000.00-$320,000.00. Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include: stock. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Business, Human Resources, or related field and 6 years’ experience in compliance, ethics, legal, project management, or related area OR 8 years’ experience in compliance, ethics, legal, project management, or related area. 5 years’ experience using intermediate functionality of Microsoft Office. 5 years’ of supervisory experience.
