The Chief Human Resources Officer role at Wake County seeks a strategic partner who can lead with empathy, unify departments, and drive system-wide HR improvements in a complex public sector environment. The Human Resources Department provides County-wide HR support including Talent Acquisition, Benefits, Compensation, Organizational Development & Training, Payroll, and Employee Relations. Reporting to the County Manager, the CHRO will lead 70+ HR professionals across eight functional areas and build a collaborative, people-first culture.Wake County is home to over 1.2 million residents and is known for a strong economy, high quality of life, and exceptional public services. Located in North Carolina’s Research Triangle, it offers top-rated schools, world-class healthcare, outdoor recreation, and a thriving arts and culture scene.ResponsibilitiesThe Chief Human Resources Officer will:Lead 70+ HR professionals across eight functional areasUnify departments and foster a collaborative, people-first cultureDrive system-wide improvements while supporting frontline staff and internal clientsProvide strategic leadership and effective communication to reestablish trust and connection through empathetic, resilient leadershipRequired qualificationsBachelor’s in HR Management, Public Administration, or BusinessEight years of related experience, including four in senior leadershipPreferred qualificationsMaster’s in Public Administration, HR, or BusinessDepartment head or executive leadership experience in local governmentSHRM or PSHRA certificationCompensationSalary range for this position is $158,953 to $286,114, depending on qualifications and education.Application and contact informationPlease apply online.
