Job Description

The Department of English at Louisiana State University (LSU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Folklore, beginning in August of 2026. Located in Baton Rouge, LSU is the flagship land-grant institution in Louisiana and a Research 1 (R1) University. We support research and teaching in a broad range of fields and many interdisciplinary programs. Requirements: Ph.D.in Folklore, or in related field with clear expertise in folklore, by the time the position begins (August 2026); record of publication or strong promise of future scholarly achievement. Preference given to candidates who can teach and direct undergraduate and graduate research on folklore studies, including but not limited to folklore and cultures of the Americas, such as the U.S. South, Louisiana, the Caribbean, and/or the Gulf Region. We are also interested in applicants working in/with digital folklore and other innovative methodologies. Teaching Expectations: The teaching load is 2/2 and consists of graduate and undergraduate courses including Intro to Folklore, American Folklore, Women and Folklore, and Topics in Folklore. The new hire in this position will also have the opportunity to design new courses and develop and work with existing interdisciplinary programs and collaborations; they are also expected to serve on graduate dissertation committees. Research Expectations: Competitive candidates should maintain an active scholarly profile on par with the expectations of an R1 institution.
