Overview Access Control & Security Specialist (4483) – College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS), UC Berkeley. The Facilities and Access Control Specialist role safeguards Gateway buildings assets and infrastructure by managing electronic access control systems, physical key systems, wayfinding signage, and maintaining accurate access and building occupant records to support secure, efficient operations. Responsibilities 25% Serves as Department Access Key Controller as defined by the UCPD Access Control Policy, maintains accurate records of all access control activities, ensures authority prior to issuing keys, orders replacement keys, recovers department keys from departing personnel, reports failures to recover keys to department management and UCPD, and securely stores unassigned keys in UCPD-approved cabinets. 25% Serves as liaison with organization and external agencies regarding safety, access, maintenance. Prepares reports on system status, incidents, and access trends for security and facility management. 25% Sends campus access control regular requests for door schedule changes in all Gateway classrooms, meeting spaces and exterior doors. 15% Manages the reception desk operations in the Gateway building. Manages a team of student staff responsible for ensuring event spaces, classrooms, and public meeting spaces are in safe operating condition. Inspects rooms after each event to ensure equipment and furniture are put back in working order. Coordinates with multiple units to provide a safe and secure facilities environment. Installs temporary and permanent building signage pertaining to events and notices regarding access interruptions. 10% Maintains building-related plans and procedures including access controls, security, emergency preparedness, crime prevention activities, and fire safety inspection compliance and reporting. Ensures building access aligns with operating hours, occupancy limits, and emergency protocols. Maintains accurate records of system configurations, user access levels, and system changes. Maintains inventory of access control hardware and consumables (e.g., temporary ID cards, metal keys, and security cameras). 10% Manages the Gateway building access system data, alarms, and security video; safeguards communications with campus access control unit and UCPD. Works with internal and external agencies/contractors regarding contract terms or to solicit new contracts. Coordinates with vendors and contractors for installation and commissioning of access control hardware/software. 10% Develops space allocation plans for management review. Manages occupancy space assignment data and is responsible for office signage updates. Conducts graduate student occupancy surveys annually to determine desk availability for incoming graduate students. Maintains CDSS facilities space database for Gateway and other college facilities, including verification of space availability for faculty, students, staff, and visitors. Updates furniture plans for space planning purposes with occupants and leadership. 10% May act as representative of the organization safety committee, emergency committee, and ergonomic program, and ensures departmental compliance with OSHA/EH&S regulations. Maintains first aid supplies, fire extinguishers and other safety equipment; coordinates CPR/First Aid and AED training for emergency response team staff; maintains department radios and conducts monthly radio checks; may serve as back-up Incident Commander in building emergencies. Coordinates work crew activities to minimize disruption to building occupants; collaborates with EH&S annual fire inspections and safety actions; works with occupants to recover losses as needed. 5% Assists department leadership with budget development for moves and minor building infrastructure upgrades; tracks campus recharge fees for card readers and security camera systems. 5% Coordinates emergency repairs during and after work hours; responds to after-hour repairs and critical infrastructure alarms according to campus protocol. 5% Recommends facilities-related procedures and solutions considering budgets, space allocation, equity, staffing, and infrastructure design. 5% Conducts regular rounds to inspect areas for security, fire and accident hazards; reports infractions of codes and rules to management; initiates maintenance requests for simple concerns (e.g., replace a light bulb). Required Qualifications Thorough knowledge in building space planning, codes, capacity, security, fire safety, and related risk assessment principles and procedures. Strong interpersonal and communication skills; service orientation and effective problem-solving. Ability to multi-task and prioritize daily activities effectively. Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of architectural or engineering concepts.
