OverviewThe Stanford Center for Genomics and Personalized Medicine (SCGPM) has an exciting opportunity for a motivated Biomedical Cloud Engineer to create innovative data architectures that turn big genomic data into biomedical insights. The ideal candidate will interpret biological questions, assess technologies and methods, and deliver actionable technical solutions. The position can be on-site in Palo Alto, fully remote, or hybrid.Duties IncludeMaintaining the smooth execution of the production Trellis systemWorking with the Security Operations team to respond to security incidentsConstructing queries to the graph database to gain insights from pipeline run dataImplementing population-level genomic analyses (GWAS, PCA) to verify data integrityDesigning and integrating novel bioinformatics pipelines into the Trellis systemTroubleshooting data flow in the state-driven Trellis architectureBuilding containers for bioinformatics tools and integrating them with the internal data management system to automate workflowsCollaborating with researchers to explore solutions to relevant biological questions and maximize the value of the whole-genome sequencing datasetOther duties may also be assignedDesired QualificationsFour-year degree in Genetics, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Physics, or a related fieldExperience with biomedical data formats (FASTQ, FASTA, BAM, CRAM, Hail MatrixTable, et al.)Comfortable programming in PythonExperience with cloud computing, especially Google CloudExperience with databases, especially graph databasesExperience with big data technologies (e.g., BigQuery, Spark, Hail, Terra)Familiarity with computer data security and FedRAMP cloud securityFamiliarity with FAIR data management principlesExcellent verbal and written communication skillsAbility to independently grasp research objectives and assemble solutions from multiple technologies and standardsWillingness to learn new methods and adapt to fast-paced researchEducation & Experience (required)Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (required)Expertise in designing, developing, testing, and deploying applicationsProficiency with application design and data modelingAbility to define and solve logical problems for highly technical applicationsStrong communication skills for technical and non-technical clientsAbility to lead activities on structured team development projectsAbility to select, adapt, and effectively use diverse programming methodsKnowledge of the application domainCertifications & LicensesNonePhysical RequirementsConstantly perform desk-based computer tasksFrequently sit, grasp, or perform fine manipulationOccasionally stand or walk; writing by handRarely lift/carry/push/pull objects up to 10 poundsWorking ConditionsMay work extended hours, evenings and weekends.Work StandardsInterpersonal skills: ability to work well with Stanford colleagues, clients, and external organizationsPromote culture of safety: commitment to safety and reporting concernsComply with university policies and proceduresThe job duties listed are typical examples and not a comprehensive inventory of all duties.
