Job Description

OverviewThis is highly responsible, technical work performing as a Professional Surveyor and Mapper for the City of Miami.The position involves performing land surveys for the City of Miami or acting as a consultant/adviser monitoring the work of private surveying and mapping companies under contract with the City. The incumbent may be assigned to the Department of Resilience and Public Works or another City Department to function in the capacity of a professional surveyor, reviewing, processing and approving survey plans, tentative plats, final plats, sketches and legal descriptions, right-of-way deeds, and related duties. The employee has considerable independence of action and authority to review and sign plans, specifications, and other documents as a Licensed Professional Surveyor and Mapper. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate technical and/or administrative staff. Administrative direction may be received from one or more of the Senior Surveyor, Assistant and/or Deputy Director, Department Director, or designee through review of reports, conferences, inspections, and observation of program effectiveness.Depending upon area assigned, the employee may assist the Senior Surveyor or be independently responsible for reviewing and processing record plats, checking municipal atlas sheets, establishing city monument lines and benchmarks, preparing right-of-way deeds of dedication, verifying and preparing legal descriptions, and preparing sketches for legal descriptions.ResponsibilitiesReview building plans for permits, index, file, maintain and reproduce public records such as plats, surveys, aerial photographs, and construction plans for City employees and the general public.Consult with or assist the Senior Surveyor in advising Engineers, Land Surveyors and the general public on issues relating to surveying and mapping.Determine the adaptability of plans and designs to particular field conditions.Perform certified surveys as assigned and may be required to testify in court representing the City as a Professional Surveyor and Mapper.Coordinate the selection process of private land surveying firms for City contracts and distribute survey work when inter- or intradepartmental requests are received.Provide office and field supervision of crews in conducting surveys; perform complex mathematical calculations, check field notes, and ensure necessary corrections.Plan, assign, coordinate and supervise the work of subordinate technical, clerical, and/or administrative staff.Make recommendations regarding hiring, discipline, and promotion of subordinates; authorize leave and evaluate employee performance.Participate in the administration of collective bargaining agreements, Civil Service Rules and Departmental policies and procedures.Perform related duties as required.Possess and maintain a State of Florida Professional Surveyor and Mapper License in accordance with Chapter 472, State of Florida Statutes, at time of application and throughout employment.Have six (6) months of experience in land surveying and mapping work as a licensed Professional Surveyor and Mapper.Possess a valid driver’s license; a Florida Driver’s License is required at time of appointment and must be maintained valid throughout employment.QualificationsA valid State of Florida Professional Surveyor and Mapper License in accordance with Chapter 472, State of Florida Statutes, is required at time of application and must be maintained valid throughout employment.Six (6) months experience in land surveying and mapping work as a licensed Professional Surveyor and Mapper.A valid driver’s license from any state; Florida Driver’s License (Class E or higher) required at time of appointment and maintained.Administrative and Application DetailsPLEASE READ CAREFULLY.
