Overview Liberty Mutual is building a dedicated Life Sciences Underwriting team to launch the Life Sciences Industry Practice within the Middle Market. The role reports to the Chief Underwriting Officer, Middle Market Life Sciences, and supports a multi-line underwriting approach for mid-sized Life Sciences companies (R&D stage through $2B insured product/service revenue) across biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, dietary supplements, analytical laboratories, digital health, and related ecosystems. The team collaborates with Claims, Risk Control, and other service professionals to deliver specialized insurance solutions. This role is hybrid: 2 days/week in office and 3 days/week working from home. The expected geographic scope may require travel up to 25%. Responsibilities - Executive Underwriter New business underwriting for profitable growth: review, evaluate, underwrite submissions; rate and determine terms; obtain approvals as needed; present proposals to agents/brokers; negotiate deals. Serve accounts after winning the business in coordination with Liberty Account Analysts and Client Service Managers; meet with insureds to uphold the value proposition. Manage portfolio of brokers/agents and clients; build and maintain strong relationships to facilitate marketing of products; conduct site visits and renewal meetings; develop a long-term pipeline. Identify, manage, and solicit a pipeline of opportunities; articulate key coverage differences in Life Sciences. Maintain knowledge of legal/regulatory developments impacting underwriting in Life Sciences; share technical knowledge externally when appropriate. Mentor, coach, and train other underwriters and internal/external partners. Contribute to business and marketing planning with data-driven insights from portfolio analysis. Participate in projects and initiatives to grow Liberty Mutual’s Life Sciences Industry Practice and drive underwriting/process excellence. Collaborate across teams (Distribution, Operations, UW Support, Claims, Actuarial, North America leadership) to drive success. Qualifications Degree in Business, Risk Management, or Scientific Field or equivalent Minimum 7 years of progressive underwriting experience; typically 10+ years; Life Sciences underwriting experience required (minimum 5 years) CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred Strong analytical ability to evaluate underwriting risks; advanced knowledge of Life Sciences insurance products and market dynamics Proven track record underwriting profitable Life Sciences business Ability to communicate complex analyses clearly in written and oral form for underwriting/training purposes Strong communication and interpersonal skills with internal and external stakeholders Ability to understand and implement underwriting and administrative processes for complex issues About Us & Pay Liberty Mutual is an equal opportunity employer.
