Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military MedicineJoin the HJF Team! HJF is seeking a Scientist III - Defense Health Cooperation to lead the development and execution of research projects. Supervises projects and investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols.This position will be in support of the National Institute for Defense Health Cooperation (NIDHC). The ideal candidate will develop, lead, and manage complex quantitative analytic projects; align technical projects to program and leadership priorities; and effectively collaborate with internal and external partners. This role significantly contributes to technical execution, communication, and dissemination of diverse applied research and operational efforts conducted within the NIDHC and in collaboration with partners. Additionally, this individual is expected to mentor junior scientists and maintain technical proficiency in quantitative analytics (e.g., applied mathematics, biostatistics, epidemiology), complex dynamic systems, and modeling and simulation relative to health and medicine during crisis and conflict. Responsibilities Lead teams designing and developing applied research in analysis and dynamic modeling of health systems. Leverage and grow partnerships and collaborations to apply advanced techniques that more efficiently gather, analyze, and interpret data, including the application of large language models. Closely collaborate with NIDHC partner entities to design and calibrate research protocols that fulfill NIDHC mission requirements. Ensure methodological rigor, adherence to ethical standards and regulatory guidelines, and alignment with NIDHC and program goals. Identify and develop new scientific opportunities through engagement with federal interagency partners across the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Veterans Administration, State, Health and Human Services, and Transportation. Regularly engage with partners and stakeholders to translate complex analytic results into relevant and applicable findings that motivate program success. Author and co-author manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals. Review and critically evaluate manuscripts from team members and partners, providing constructive feedback to improve technical quality and clarity. Articulate research findings through written products and oral briefings to clearly convey relevance and impact Project Development and Management. Contribute to the planning and execution of research projects, including developing timelines, managing resources, and ensuring technical quality. Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure project intent is achieved. Monitor project progress, identify challenges, and implement strategies to overcome obstacles. Provide mentorship and guidance to junior research staff, including graduate students, postdocs, and research associates. Support research staff professional development through training, feedback, and career guidance. Oversee the daily activities of junior staff to ensure the successful completion of research tasks. Supervisory Responsibilities Direct Supervisor: Direct authority to make decisions on employee hiring, disciplinary action, starting salaries and merit increases; conduct employee performance evaluations and directs work activities. Qualifications Education and Experience Doctoral Degree required. Minimum of 8-10 years' experience required. Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques. Excellent communication skills. Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures. Ability to work independently and supervise others. US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T5/Top Secret clearance. Physical Capabilities Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs. Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods Work Environment This position will take place primarily in an office setting. Compensation The annual salary range for this position is $100,500-$150,000.
