Let’s grow together.General Counsel — OverviewThe General Counsel serves as the chief legal advisor to the mortgage company, overseeing all legal matters including regulatory compliance, contract negotiation, corporate governance, litigation management, and risk mitigation. This is a strategic leadership role contributing to the company/'s long-term growth, risk management, and operational excellence.ResponsibilitiesLegal & Regulatory ComplianceEnsure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, including RESPA, TILA, ECOA, FCRA, HMDA, and other applicable regulations enforced by the CFPB, FHA, and state banking departments.Monitor and interpret changes in laws and regulations that affect mortgage lending, servicing, and consumer protection.Oversee state licensing and renewal requirements across all jurisdictions where the company operates.Corporate Governance & Risk ManagementAdvise executive leadership and the board of directors on legal implications of strategic and operational decisions.Draft and maintain corporate governance documents such as bylaws, board minutes, resolutions, and policy manuals.Identify, evaluate, and mitigate legal and regulatory risks associated with new products, services, and business lines.Litigation & Dispute ResolutionManage all litigation, arbitration, and regulatory enforcement actions involving the company.Oversee the engagement and supervision of outside counsel.Lead strategy for resolving legal disputes, including customer complaints, vendor issues, and employment matters.Contract Negotiation & ManagementDraft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts, including vendor agreements, technology contracts, loan purchase agreements, NDAs, employment contracts, and partnership agreements.Maintain an organized contract management system to ensure compliance with contractual obligations.Business Strategy & Legal SupportProvide practical legal advice to support product development, marketing, loan origination, loan servicing, capital markets, and secondary market transactions.Partner with Compliance, HR, IT, and Operations teams to ensure legally sound internal processes and procedures.Licensing & Regulatory FilingsManage and oversee licensing strategy and renewals for mortgage broker/lender/servicer licenses across states.Support the preparation of regulatory reports, investor disclosures, and examinations.Team LeadershipBuild and manage the in-house legal team, including attorneys, paralegals, and compliance professionals.Foster a culture of compliance, ethical business practices, and operational integrity across the company.QualificationsJuris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.Minimum of 8–10 years of legal experience, with at least 5 years in the mortgage industry or financial services.Deep knowledge of mortgage lending, servicing, and real estate law.Experience dealing with regulators such as CFPB, FHA, HUD, state banking departments, and attorneys general.Strong business acumen and the ability to weigh legal risks with business priorities.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Experience managing and mentoring a legal/compliance team.Preferred QualificationsPrior in-house experience at a mortgage company, lender, or servicer is a plus.Experience with secondary market operations (e.g., Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Ginnie Mae).Familiarity with compliance tools and legal risk management systems.Experience working on licensing, M&A, or corporate structuring initiatives.BenefitsPTO/Sick DaysComprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefitsPaid volunteer hoursLife Insurance, Short-term Disability, and Long-term DisabilityHealth Savings Account401kPaid training and career developmentHealthy grab-and-go snacksCareer Growth: Opportunities to develop your career, take on new challenges, and make an impact.Work-Life BalanceInclusive Culture: A diverse and inclusive workplace where all employees feel valued and empowered.Cutting-Edge Technology: Access to state-of-the-art learning tools and technologies for professional development.Equality & AccessibilityWe are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity.
