Frequent walking, sitting, bending and standing required for extended periods of time. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.Typical Working Conditions: Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to clinic environment.Examples of Duties: Prepares equipment to efficiently collect blood products. Performs venipuncture, arterial and capillary punctures on patients. Identifies and labels specimens.Conducts designated laboratory testing. Assists in care of donor prior to, during and after donation.Instructs patients on urine collection procedures. Allocates urine specimens. Performs bleeding time tests and urine dipstick tests.Cleans and sterilizes equipment, instruments, and work area. Inventories supplies and places orders.Enters laboratory data into computer system. Attends required meeting and participates in committees as requested.Enhances professional growth and development through in-service meetings and education programs. Maintains patient confidentiality.Performs related work as requires. Job Requirement:Knowledge of laboratory techniques to perform routine blood and urine tests. Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks. Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff. Skill in operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation. Skill in labeling and maintaining all materials for collection. Skill in preparing written reports concerning the results of laboratory tests and input data into computer system. Skill in making mathematical computations utilizing standard formulae. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public. Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions. Ability to follow written protocols. Ability to work independently. Ability to communicate clearly.Education:Graduation from high school or GED. Graduation from an accredited phlebotomy diploma program; Medical Assistant or EMT certification.Experience: One year of phlebotomist experience.Certificate/License: Phlebotomy certification preferred.ALTERNATIVE TO MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.
