Assistant General Counsel, Merchandising and Regulatory

Overview Of PositionWe are looking for a talented and dynamic attorney with initiative and drive who can handle a high volume of varied and complex legal work for merchandise matters. This position involves working closely with the merchandise teams to provide legal advice, training and business solutions for various product and merchandising issues, including regulatory compliance (e.g. FDA, CPSC, Customs, and EPA), vendor contracts and disputes, governmental investigations and inquiries, and marketing of products. The Assistant General Counsel, Merchandise & Regulatory will work on a daily basis with internal business partners, outside counsel, vendors, and governmental agencies on a wide variety of legal regulatory and merchandising issues. Ideal candidates will demonstrate an entrepreneurial approach to issue spotting and problem solving, with a keen eye toward constantly improving internal processes and creatively balancing commercial and compliance risks. Key Responsibilities Legal advisor for Merchandising Department for various matters, including: General legal advice Advice on laws and regulations affecting merchandise, including product evaluation and development and compliance programs Advisor and negotiator for supplier agreements, including standard supplier agreements and custom contracts with terms such as extended term, exclusivity, marketing and space funding, and rebates Advice for various commercial disputes, including product quality, product delivery, payment disputes, and service disputes; includes dispute analysis, strategy, negotiation, and settlement documents Advising on supplier bankruptcy matters Legal advisor to Quality Department for matters including: Product standards, regulation, testing and analysis Product specification and labeling Pre- and post-production product regulatory matters at all administrative levels Support for private label business, including SOPs, investigations, vendor qualification and compliance Drafting and negotiation of contracts for IT, transportation, and marketing Partner with the Compliance Department on product investigations and inquiries by governmental entities (CPSC, FDA, EPA, and state/local agencies) regarding safety and compliance Partner with Compliance on product recalls and withdrawals (in conjunction with CPSC, FDA, EPA and state agencies) Provide general legal support and training on merchandise regulatory issues Collaborate with business partners, outside counsel, vendors, and government agencies on various issues Maintain current knowledge of regulatory trends to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws Foster an ethical, inclusive, and high-standard workplace; maintain confidentiality, integrity, responsibility, and excellence in client service Perform other tasks as assigned Qualifications And Skills Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA-accredited law school with strong academic credentials Admission to practice in good standing in a U.S. jurisdiction Ten (10) or more years of experience providing legal counsel in-house and/or at a large law firm Experience handling audits or inquiries from government agencies for business units Excellent interpersonal and advisory skills with clients Experience in a high-volume environment managing multiple projects with minimal supervision Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, strong legal acumen, attention to detail, and good record-keeping Business acumen to support risk management and stakeholder relationships Full time 510 Volvo Parkway, Chesapeake, Virginia 23320 Family Dollar Job Details Location: Chesapeake, VA Industry: Retail Seniority level: Mid-Senior level Employment type: Full-time Job function: Legal #J-18808-Ljbffr
