Sacramento Zoo Animal Keeper - Full Time The Sacramento Zoo is hiring a Full-Time Animal Keeper to join our dedicated Ungulate Care Team. Position Summary The Sacramento Zoo is re-posting an opening for a Full-Time Animal Keeper to join our dedicated Animal Care Team. Animal Keepers are essential to our mission, providing daily husbandry, enrichment, training, and welfare support for a diverse collection of exotic species. Working under the guidance of Animal Care Supervisors, Keepers ensure the highest standards of care and contribute to meaningful guest engagement in alignment with AZA accreditation standards. This position will initially be assigned to the Ungulate Section, caring for a breeding herd of giraffes, okapi, our white rhino, and other species. Candidates with prior exotic ungulate experience are strongly encouraged to apply. Over time, and depending on experience and operational needs, opportunities may be available to work across additional sections and taxa. Animal Husbandry & Daily Care * Prepare diets, feed, and provide fresh water to animals in accordance with daily protocols * Clean, disinfect, and maintain habitats, holding spaces, and service areas * Conduct daily observations of animal behavior and health, and document as required * Participate in operant conditioning and behavioral training programs * Implement enrichment plans to support species-specific behaviors and welfare * Assist with medical treatments and procedures under veterinary direction * Support safe capture, restraint, and transport of animals as directed * Monitor environmental conditions and report facility needs promptly Records & Communication * Maintain accurate records using digital systems (e.g., ZIMS, Tracks) * Submit detailed reports on animal condition, behavior, incidents, and daily activities * Communicate observations, concerns, and needs effectively with team members and supervisors * Participate in section meetings and cross-departmental coordination as needed Team Contribution & Operational Support * Assist with inventory, supply management, and pest control * Participate in exhibit upkeep, habitat modification, seasonal routines, and other operational tasks including supply oversight, pest control, and coordination with other departments * Supervise, guide, and mentor assigned volunteers, interns, and Keeper-aides in their daily activities * Actively participate in departmental training programs and continuing education * Follow all safety protocols and emergency response procedures, including participating in zoo-wide drills Guest Engagement & Outreach * Conduct behind-the-scenes tours and public presentations as assigned * Interact professionally with guests, school groups, donors, and stakeholders * Represent the Zoo's mission, conservation values, and animal care philosophy in all public interactions Experience Required Minimum three (3) years paid experience as a zookeeper in a zoological setting required • Experience with exotic ungulates preferred • Bachelor's degree in zoology, biology, ecology, or a related field required; equivalent experience may be considered with approval.
