OverviewStaff Engineer - Data & Platform Engineering at GEICO. This role focuses on building high-performance, low-maintenance, zero-downtime platforms and applications. You will drive the data analytics and platform engineering transformation, lead design and development of automated solutions to replace manual Platform administrative tasks, and build data pipelines, models, and reports handling large datasets.Position SummaryGEICO is seeking an experienced Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms and applications. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission. Within the Data Analytics and Vertical Engineering team, you will lead the design and development of state-of-the-art automated solutions to replace manual Platform administrative tasks as well as lead efforts to build data pipelines, models, and reports, transforming vast datasets that reach up to multiple terabytes in size, while championing innovation, best practices, co-creating the culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.Position ResponsibilitiesScope, design, and build scalable, resilient distributed systemsUtilize a range of technologies for data processing, reporting, and automation, including Python, SQL, NoSQL, DBT, Apache Spark, Docker, Kubernetes, and Azure toolsDevelop high-quality, accurate data visualizations and reports using tools like Power BI and Apache SupersetDrive innovation by leading the adoption of new features and acquiring new software to enhance toolingDefine and implement automation strategies for administrative and governance tasks across Power Platform and Power BIDesign and build scalable automation solutions using PowerShell, REST APIs (Power BI, Graph API), and CI/CD pipelinesLead automation initiatives for user provisioning, license management, dataset refreshes, workspace lifecycle, and monitoring platform health and adoption trendsCollaborate with cross-functional teams, including security, compliance, and data governance to align solutions with enterprise policiesIntegrate automation with enterprise systems (Azure DevOps, ServiceNow, Microsoft 365, etc.) and enforce governance frameworks for environment lifecycle, access, and complianceLead proof-of-concepts and evaluations of emerging Microsoft features to improve automation capabilitiesDevelop enterprise-wide standards for monitoring, auditing, and reporting. Provide executive-level reporting and insights on platform health, compliance, and adoption trendsLead in design sessions and code reviews with peers to elevate the quality of engineering across the organizationMentor other engineers, share best practices, and improve processes across teamsDrive engineering excellence and operational excellence, reducing manual administrative effort and ensuring system reliabilityQualificationsAdvanced programming experience and big data experience within Python, SQL, DBT, Spark, Kafka, Git, containerization (Docker and Kubernetes)Advanced experience with Data Warehouses, OLAP, dimensional modeling and analyticsAdvanced knowledge of business intelligence tools (Power BI preferred) and/or ETL tools (SSIS or DBT)Experience with Apache Iceberg for managing large-scale tabular data in data lakes is a plusFamiliarity with SQL concepts (MPP-based, No-SQL, Cloud data warehouses)Experience architecting and designing new ETL and BI systems and supporting existing systemsProven expertise in PowerShell scripting, Power BI REST APIs, Graph API, and automation frameworksDeep knowledge of Power BI administration and Power Platform administrationExperience architecting CI/CD pipelines for Power BI and Power Platform solutions (Azure DevOps or GitHub)Strong understanding of identity, access management, and compliance in Microsoft 365 and Azure ADExperience with enterprise orchestration tools such as Airflow is preferredAbility to balance multiple priorities and excel in a dynamic environmentAdvanced understanding of DevOps concepts including Azure DevOps framework and toolsKnowledge of developer tooling across the software development life cycleAdvanced understanding of monitoring concepts and tooling with strong problem-solving abilityExperience with Power Platform and multiple data domains is preferredExperience with front-end development using REACT/JavaScript is a plusExperience8+ years of professional data/analytics/database engineering, programming languages and developing with big data technologies5+ years of data architecture and design, especially Data Warehousing concepts5+ years of experience with cloud services (AWS, GCP, Azure)4+ years of software development experience with SQL-based technologies4+ years of experience with open-source frameworks4+ years of experience with BI and ETL tools3+ years of experience with big-data tools like Spark and Databricks2+ years of experience with Microsoft Fabric/Azure Data Factory preferredEducationBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Data Analytics or equivalent education or work experienceBase pay range$105,000.00/yr - $230,000.00/yrSalary notesThe above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/annual salary. Factors include scope and responsibilities, work experience, education and training, work location, and market considerations.
