OverviewThe Vice President of Design and Engineering will provide technical and engineering leadership for both design-build and engineering-only projects and pursuits. The responsibilities include maintaining and, where necessary, establishing standards for Austin’s design and engineering process. The purposes of these standards are to ensure consistency, define the level of quality for deliverables, and provide efficient and effective design and engineering processes that support The Austin Method, so that projects are completed on-time, within budget, at the highest quality levels and meet client satisfaction.RequirementsEducation: a bachelor’s degree in engineering or architecture from an accredited engineering school. This position requires professional registration and the ability to secure reciprocity in multiple states via NCEES or NCARB programs.Experience: Minimum of 15 years of experience, of which at least five years are at the manager or director level of an engineering department.Skills: Good oral and written communication skills; strong leadership and team management; solid understanding of regulatory requirements and compliance standards in the engineering sector; ability to drive change and foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement; experience with financial management and budgeting for engineering projects.Additional: Must have a thorough understanding of Austin’s business, method of operation and goals, as well as knowledge of good business practices, overall operations and the competitive environment of the industry.Responsibilities (Summary)Provide strategic leadership and direction to the design and engineering team, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and innovation. Hold the team accountable for their duties and responsibilities.Develop the vision for engineering success and own the outcome of the overall engineering strategy.Collaborate with Directors of Engineering to assign resources to project teams, ensuring the availability of capabilities required for successful project performance.Monitor and measure the quality of design and engineering capability and performance in all operations, ensuring client satisfaction, high-quality service and deliverables, and profitability aligned with Austin’s annual plan.Ensure distribution of work to projects and pursuits for all design and engineering personnel to meet established and budgeted amounts.Maintain and develop policies, processes, and procedures related to the design and engineering function; monitor and ensure compliance.Identify and lead the development of market-specific engineering standards, resources, and tools to improve design production and efficiency.Ensure proper architecture and engineering registrations and licenses are maintained in all operating locations.Monitor professional practices to comply with laws and regulations pertaining to architecture and engineering in all vestigate significant design errors and implement actions to avoid repetition and reduce engineering overhead costs.Periodically review drawings, specifications, preliminary studies and reports to ensure conformity with good practice.Participate in professional organizations and prepare presentations for clients and professional groups.Review and approve requests for computerized equipment and software to support design and engineering functions, ensuring cost-effectiveness and productivity.Identify, recommend, and monitor training and development of designers, architects, and engineers to maintain high performance.Approve succession plans within the engineering department and oversee development for key individuals to take on increased responsibilities.Assist marketing, communications, and sales when their needs involve design or engineering information for success of company efforts.Review and submit annual budgets for the engineering department for management approval.Maintain a monthly index of engineering backlog for historical and planning purposes.Maintain liaison with Risk Management on professional liability matters to prevent liability problems and support defense when needed.Benefits and Company InformationAustin offers a comprehensive benefits package including Medical and Dental, Life, Short-Term and Long-Term Disability, and 401(k) with matching, as well as a competitive salary with opportunities for advancement.Austin is an EEO and DFWP Employer.
