UDRI has performed more than $3 billion in cumulative sponsored research, with sponsored research for 2024 alone exceeding $250 million. This role provides strategic legal counsel on complex research agreements, intellectual property matters, regulatory compliance, and federal contracting issues. Partner with researchers, government agencies, and industry leaders to navigate the legal landscape of breakthrough technologies in aerospace, materials science, cybersecurity, and more.ResponsibilitiesProvide strategic legal counsel on complex research agreements, intellectual property matters, regulatory compliance, and federal contracting issuesCollaborate with researchers, government agencies, and industry leaders to navigate legal considerations in breakthrough technologiesServe as the point person for legal issues related to federally-funded researchProvide strategic legal and regulatory advice and support in commercial transactions and business operations, research compliance, data security and privacy, and other state and federal laws applicable to federal contractorsAssist with or lead other legal issues as needs arise; collaborate with UDRI, the UD Office of Legal Affairs, and colleagues across the UniversityDemonstrate high organization, strong problem-solving, and effective teamworkMinimum QualificationsJ.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law schoolActive license in good standing to practice law in Ohio or ability to gain admission to Ohio bar within one yearAt least 9 years of relevant experience with increasing responsibility and client interactionExperience with review and negotiation of federal, state, or industry contracts related to sponsored researchExcellent legal research and writing skills, including the ability to draft internal policiesEffective verbal communication skillsComfort with newer technologies and tools (e.g., cloud-based applications, document storage)Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse teamsU.S. person status due to federal contracting requirementsAbility to obtain and maintain a security clearanceValid driver's license with low-risk driving recordPreferred QualificationsRecent experience practicing law in Ohio10 or more years of relevant experienceExperience with federal regulations and procedures governing federal contracting (e.g., OMB Uniform Guidance, FAR, DFARS)Experience with research complianceExperience managing people, particularly other legal professionalsStrong interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to work strategically with clientsAbility to learn new areas of law quickly and handle multiple matters independentlyCommitment to inclusive excellence in line with the University's Catholic and Marianist missionFamiliarity with legal issues facing colleges and universitiesHow to ApplySpecial Instructions to Applicants: To apply please submit a cover letter addressing each minimum qualification and any applicable preferred qualifications that you meet.Equal OpportunityInformed by its Catholic and Marianist mission, the University is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
