Overview Our team supports the research organization that includes translational and clinical research in an academic health setting comprising a School of Medicine, R&D facilities and 18 acute care facilities. The position will support and oversee others supporting contracting for research and clinical trials and intellectual property management and technology transfer. Support may be provided for other areas such as corporate, complex contract matters, litigation, academic, and regulatory advising and support. This position reports directly to the Senior Vice President/Deputy General Counsel. Responsibilities Provides legal support and guidance to HMH and its affiliated organizations in the VP, Associate General Counsel's area of focus, including legal research, legal advice to clients, litigation counsel supervision, and drafting/negotiating contracts and organizational documents. Negotiates, drafts and reviews complex contracts prior to execution when contract-focused. Reviews and drafts policies and procedures for HMH. Participates in and leads educational programs on pertinent topics for HMH and affiliated organizations' staff. Reviews applicable legislation and case law as necessary. Reviews, revises and counsels with respect to legal implications of policies, consents, laws, rules, and regulations. Participates in cross-functional groups and committees as appropriate. Owns and directs projects, including directing paraprofessionals in support of such projects. Maintains composure and efficiency while handling a variety of tasks and changing priorities. Provides cross-functional leadership to enable completion of legal work. Communicates clearly, effectively and tactfully. Operates with integrity and high ethical standards. Demonstrates a clear vision that supports HMH's mission and values; anticipates challenges and opportunities; drives action to deliver results. Fosters a collaborative culture within the Legal Services Department to help HMH accomplish its mission and strategic priorities. Other duties and/or projects as assigned. Adheres to organizational competencies and standards of behavior. Qualifications Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: BA/BS; JD required. A minimum of 7 years' experience in the practice of law related to the area of practice to be assigned. Demonstrated ability to work with and learn information technology programs necessary to the operation of the department and area of practice assigned. Strong leadership skills. Strong written and verbal communication and research skills. Effective project management skills. Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office and Google Suite. Education, Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Preferred Knowledge of and experience with relevant state and federal healthcare law and regulations and healthcare operations. Experience working in an in-house department. Experience supervising and guiding paraprofessionals. Licenses And Certifications Required Licensed to practice law in New Jersey or otherwise authorized to practice as in-house counsel pursuant to R. 1:27-2.
