Founded in 1881, Spelman College is a private four-year liberal arts college located in Atlanta, GA. The oldest historically Black college for women in the United States, Spelman is a member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium and Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education. Position Description The Department of Art & Visual Culture invites applications for a part-time Instructor in Art to teach an undergraduate foundations course Space: Materials Form and Process (Intro to 'Sculpture') to majors and non majors beginning Spring 2026. Instructor must teach in-person. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a strong background in three-dimensional media including, but not limited to, found objects, installation, soft sculpture, sewing, and 3D mixed media. Applicants should have an active professional studio practice that includes exhibitions, residencies/fellowships, and/or publications. The ideal candidate should be prepared to introduce students to an inclusive collection of contemporary artist practices that extend beyond the western canon and able to offer students instruction in three dimensional making practices that span scale, form, site specificity, material play and the unconventional. The ideal candidate will be capable of orientating students on safe use of the wood shop (miter saw, table saw, panel saw, hand tools) and should demonstrate a capacity to encourage students to explore, experiment, and iterate as well as read, write, research, and critique. The ideal candidate will have a M.F.A. or equivalent professional experience. Prior teaching experience in foundations or sculpture is preferred but not required. The appointment requires the teaching of SAVC 215 Space: Materials Form and Process and scheduled monitoring of the Art Program Studio. Qualifications The successful candidate will have earned a terminal degree (MFA) or an equivalent record of professional accomplishments.
