OverviewMetroLaser, Inc. is a leading R & D company recognized for its laser-based measurement and optical diagnostics technologies for industrial, military, and space applications. Since 1988, MetroLaser, Inc. has been at the forefront of optical diagnostics research and development as well as the commercialization of systems to measure flow velocity, temperature, chemical composition, surface temperature, and non-destructive inspection of components. The core business lies in the defense sector, NASA and DOE, and as a commercial provider of flow, combustion and plasma diagnostics.We have an exciting opening for an Optical Scientist in Wavefront Sensing at our office in Laguna Hills, CA. The appointee will support the scientific staff in implementation, investigation and analysis of laboratory-based experiments and engineering problems. The candidate is expected to work with minimal supervision, prioritize time to keep projects on schedule, document results, and communicate findings to the scientific staff. The appointee will work as part of a team and may lead efforts with other engineers and technicians.Job ResponsibilitiesAssemble and conduct optical breadboard experiments to support instrument development.Design, analyze and assemble optical systems for measurements, from inception to prototyping.Develop timelines and resources to implement solutions for project execution.Perform wavefront measurements in compressible aerodynamic flows (boundary layers, shear layers and shocks) and compute the wavefront distortions.Analyze and document findings/results for municate and interface with technical and administrative staff to investigate and solve engineering problems.Prepare technical presentations for internal use, conferences and customers.QualificationsMS/Ph.D. in optical sciences/engineering or equivalent, with 2+ years of work experience after PhD or 4+ years after MS.Thorough understanding of optics, lens design, and optical systems design.Experience with lasers and optical detectors.Highly motivated and a self-starter with ability to quickly absorb new concepts and apply them within timelines and resources.Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in a team.Experience with LabVIEW and SOLIDWORKS.Experience with Zemax or a similar optical design software.Experience in image processing and software coding using C/C++/Python/MATLAB, and computation of wavefront distortions.Expertise in wavefront measurement and analyses; adaptive optics for correcting wavefront aberrations caused by atmospheric and flow turbulence is a plus.Working knowledge of interferometry and holography is a plus.Knowledge of machine learning and data science is a plus.Knowledge of aero-optics effects from flow compressibility and turbulence is a plus.Knowledge of fluid mechanics and high-speed aerodynamics is a plus.BenefitsMetroLaser, Inc. offers a highly competitive compensation and fringe benefit package that includes retirement plan with matching contributions; health, dental and vision benefits; generous paid time off; sick leave; and a highly intellectual, collaborative work environment.Equal Opportunity & EligibilityMetroLaser, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer.
