Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.Basic Requirements:United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA PolicyEducation: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicineThe degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completedLicense: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of ColumbiaResidency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiencesResidents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basisPRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervisionAdditionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPsProficiency in spoken and written EnglishPreferred Experience: Completion of Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology approved fellowship in GlaucomaAmerican Board of Ophthalmology certification or board eligibleCompetent in the diagnosis and treatment of all forms of glaucomaProficient in performing complex cataract surgeryProficient in performing traditional glaucoma surgery and microinvasive glaucoma surgeryPrevious experience with resident clinical and surgical supervisionPosition requires teaching responsibilitiesReference: For more information on this qualification standard, please visit Requirements: This position may require potentially long periods of continued Light lifting under 15 pounds, Light carrying under 15 pounds, Use of fingers, Walking for 4 hours, Standing for 4 hours, Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, Ability to distinguish basic colors, Ability to distinguish shades of colorsDuties and Responsibilities:Duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: Responsible for patient care, education, and research in the Ophthalmology Section of Surgical ServiceCovers hospitalized patients and all phases of ambulatory careMust have excellent diagnostic skills and expertise in the field of glaucoma, including experience with traditional and minimally invasive glaucoma surgical procedures and drainage implantsMust be proficient in performing glaucoma laser procedures and in performing and interpreting glaucoma diagnostic testingMust be proficient in the medical and surgical management of all types of glaucoma, including but not limited to open angle glaucoma, angle closure glaucoma, neovascular glaucoma, low-tension glaucoma, and ocular hypertensionTeaching responsibilities include the teaching of ophthalmology residentsShould possess well-developed knowledge and/or skill in the areas of: adult education principles for use in continuing education programs for both staff and patients, psychosocial aspects of health care required to provide comprehensive patient care, preventive medicine and primary care, the role of non-physician health care professionals, and health care evaluationResponsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with medical diseases, accomplished through ambulatory and bed-based resources assigned to Ophthalmology and OptometryMust actively participate in patient care through hospital rounds, morning reports, conferences, consultations, participation in ambulatory care, and other similar activitiesResponsible for coordinating and providing ophthalmologic consultation throughout the medical centerWork Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pmVA offers a comprehensive total rewards package, including Education Debt Reduction Program, competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases, paid time off, retirement, and insurance. #J-18808-Ljbffr
