External Organizer Northern California (Posted 10/03/2023)SEIU Local 1021 was founded in 2007 when 10 local unions cametogether in northern California to form one larger, more powerfulunion. Together, our members are building a true 21st-centuryunion fighting to empower and improve the lives of our members.We are 60,000 strong—organizing and representing public serviceworkers in cities, counties, courts, schools, privatenon-profits, special districts, public health care, and nursing.We are looking for energetic, hardworking staff that arecommitted to real change, who believe in the value of work andthe value of public services, and who want to be part of the teamthat wins for workers, their families, and their communities.LOCATION:Northern CaliforniaEXPERIENCE:One (1) year of experience inunion organizing. External organizing and related experience willbe given consideration, as will steward and rank-and-fileexperience.RESPONSIBILITIES:Will work with theOrganizing staff to implement the organizing plan of the LocalUnion.Identify and recruit worker leaders who want toorganize to jointheunion; direct contact withunorganized workers; development of leadership and structure oforganizing campaigns, as well as to conduct organizing drives andrepresentation elections. Mobilize union members to support neworganizing. This is not a 9 to 5 job and includes long and variedhours, with early morning, evening, and weekend work, asnecessary. May requiretravel and periodsofovernights.SKILLS, APTITUDE, AND COMMITMENT:Ability to work effectively as part of ateam;High-level ability to communicate orally and inwriting;Ability to create a message that resonates with workers;Ability to work under pressure and with minimal supervision;Must be well-organized andself-motivated;Ability to exercise good judgment anddiscernpriorities;Ability to make effective use of resources available totheunion;Dedication to improving the position of working people andstrengthening the role of organizedlabor in society throughwork actions, community relations, and legislative andpoliticalactivity;Ability to work effectively with members and staff fromdiverse groups and identities.EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:Responsible for probingof potential organizing targets.You will conduct worksitemeetings and house visits with workers; facilitate worksitemeetings with workers; develop weekly and monthly plans based onoverall campaign goals; identify worker issues; assess workers;mobilize workers for public actions, track worker data; identifyand recruit worker leaders.REQUIREMENTS:Must possess a validCalifornia driver’s license; must pass a DMV check and have agood driving record; must have auto insurance that coversbusiness driving (minimum of $100,000 per person/$300,000 perincident bodily injury liability/$50,000 property coverage); andmust possess an automobile for business use.SALARY AND BENEFITS:The current salaryrange is $72,433.15 – $118,968.57 based on qualifications andexperience.
