The Psychiatrist is a Medical Doctor highly trained in a range of mental health conditions who is licensed to diagnose, and prescribe medications to treat acute, episodic, and chronic illnesses while focusing on health promotion and maintenance. The Psychiatrist works collectively with a care team and must treat within the scope of practice for the State of Michigan.ResponsibilitiesEnsures all actions, job performance, personal conduct and communications represent the organization in a highly professional manner.Performs comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and medication reviews based on licensure and board-certified competencies.Analyzes and interprets patient histories, symptoms, physical findings, and/or diagnostic information to assign appropriate diagnoses; consults with primary care provider(s) as needed.Evaluates patient need for psychotropic medications and prescribes as indicated; provides medication reviews to monitor effectiveness of medication(s), compliance and identify any potential side effects that need intervention.Counsels patients about drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with other substances; provides verbal and written information to all patients for all prescribed medications.Detects and responds to adverse drug reactions with special attention to vulnerable populations.Conducts Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS) tests on patients at least quarterly.Systematically reviews and authorizes, by electronic signature, patient IPOS and need for continuing treatment quarterly or more frequently, if indicated.Manages patient mental health through both acute and chronic episodes; recommends referrals for specialized medical services from community providers as appropriate and provides documentation to justify and assist in facilitating the referral.Evaluates patients in need of psychiatric hospitalization and alternative treatment orders; assists with inpatient referrals as necessary and consults with clinical and hospital staff regarding treatment needs and aftercare plans.Education And ExperienceMust possess a valid Michigan licensure as a Medical Doctor and be eligible for appropriate credentialing.Must meet all Continuing Education requirements.Prior experience working in a community mental health or FQHC setting preferred.Must be able to work cooperatively with staff and others involved in the delivery of service to patients.BLS and ACLS required.Experience in managing multiple tasks simultaneously and meeting critical deadlines.Must maintain confidentiality relating to treatment in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.Knowledge of PCMH.Provide direct, patient-centered care to adult patients aged 18 and older in an outpatient clinical setting.Perform comprehensive and problem-focused medical evaluations, histories, physical examinations, and formulate treatment plans.Diagnose and manage a wide range of chronic and acute medical conditions including hypertension, diabetes, COPD, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and infectious diseases.Provide preventive care and health screenings in accordance with national guidelines (e.g., USPSTF).Order, interpret, and follow up on diagnostic tests (e.g., labs, imaging, ECGs), and make referrals as clinically indicated.Prescribe medications appropriately, considering formulary limitations and cost-effectiveness.Collaborate with behavioral health, care coordination, and specialty providers to support holistic, team-based care.Utilize the electronic health record (EHR) system for accurate and timely documentation, adhering to organizational and regulatory standards.Participate in interdisciplinary team huddles, peer reviews, case conferences, and quality improvement activities.Educate patients and their families on health conditions, treatment options, medications, and preventive strategies.Maintain active licensure and complete required continuing medical education (CME) in a timely manner.Participate in community health outreach and events, as needed.All statements are intended to outline the primary responsibilities of this position and may change at the organization’s discretion.
