OverviewAs staff psychiatrist for the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center (LAJVAMC), the incumbent is assigned to the Behavioral Health Service and works under the Service Chief of Behavioral Health. The role is responsible for direct psychiatric and medical management care of Veterans at the LAJVAMC.ResponsibilitiesFunctions as a provider in the psychiatry specialty. The staff psychiatrist is responsible for the overall psychiatric care of patients requiring treatment in this specialty, including consultative, prescriptive, and ordering authority in the outpatient setting at the LAJVAMC. The incumbent ensures the quality and timeliness of the services provided and collaborates with referring providers.Clinical duties include diagnosis, management, and follow-up of psychiatric patients; review and make recommendations for transfer to a tertiary care center when appropriate; serve as an attending to medical students and psychiatry residents; perform call duties and inpatient coverage.Conducts compensation and pension exams as assigned by the Chief of Behavioral tervenes with appropriate individuals/departments/agencies regarding delays in service that may impact quality of patient care, length of stay, or inappropriate admissions. Works as part of a collaborative team with the assigned nurse case manager when appropriate.Assesses patient/family adaptation to illness and provides resources to address identified needs.Serves as a resource to the interdisciplinary team for community-based social service agencies and VA programs.Attends treatment team rounds and actively participates in discussions regarding psychiatric issues and discharge needs.Reviews patient information for assigned caseload, determines anticipated length of stay and discharge plan, and begins discharge planning in collaboration with the care management team, patient, and teracts with home care staff, community agencies, and facilities to ensure safe and timely discharge.Negotiates follow-up with the care management team to evaluate discharge plan effectiveness and address problems in service delivery.Ensures coordination of communication with the patient/family concerning the discharge plan, including family meetings.Demonstrates a commitment to professional growth and creates an environment conducive to the growth of others.Provides clinical consultation and supervision to students and residents; offers education and consultation to interdisciplinary health care providers on psychiatric issues; meets continuing education requirements to maintain licensure and VA requirements.Participates on committees related to psychiatry roles and quality issues to support excellent care for Veterans.Work ScheduleMonday - Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pmQualificationsBasic Requirements: United States Citizenship; Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent; current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia; completion of residency training in an approved core specialty; proficiency in spoken and written English; ability to obtain and maintain board certification or eligibility as applicable; subject to background/security investigation; compliance with pre-employment requirements and safe patient handling, including training and vaccination requirements as applicable.Additional requirements: Board Certified or Board Eligible; successful completion of pre-employment checks and credentialing as required by VA policy.NotesThis position offers a comprehensive total rewards package and may include incentives where applicable.
