Job Description

OverviewGenetic Counselor (OB GYN Gynecology and Obstetrics) - 118559. PRN role providing direct patient care at least one day per week, in person or via telemedicine, at an office at the hospital.Direct patient care includes genetic counseling, patient education, eliciting/updating and assessing personal and family histories, discussing risk assessment, recurrence risk, genetic concepts, and natural history of disease, discussing/coordinating genetic testing and potential results of testing, and performing psychosocial assessment and providing support services. Activities before and after patient encounters include reviewing medical records, researching genetic conditions and variant information, coordinating testing, and engaging in discussion and coordination of care with other members of the patient care team.ResponsibilitiesProvides genetic counseling to patients referred for indications including maternal age, abnormal screening results, abnormal ultrasound findings, family history concerns, pregnancy loss, teratogenic exposures, and infertility.Case preparation for counseling sessions may include review of prior testing results, researching the condition of concern, and arranging appropriate testing.Coordinates testing, which may include chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, ultrasound and carrier screening.Maintains good case management and communicates with maternal-fetal medicine physicians, other medical specialists, referring obstetric providers, and laboratories.Provides follow-up with patients and referring providers with test results, documentation of counseling sessions, and arrangements for additional consultations or testing. Cases are presented in weekly conferences for management and education.Demonstrates critical thinking and independent work ethic; autonomy is available in this setting.Opportunities to participate in education, including lectures to student groups and medical providers, and supervision of genetic counseling trainees and residents on elective rotations.Collaborates in clinical research and interacts with counselors in other departments at the academic medical center.Minimum QualificationsMaster/'s Degree from a graduate program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. Must seek and maintain ABGC certification within one year of hire.Additional education may substitute for required experience; additional related experience may substitute for required education per the Johns Hopkins equivalency formula.Preferred QualificationsMust be licensed by the Maryland Board of Physicians.One-year genetic counseling experience. #J-18808-Ljbffr
