Unclaimed Property Tax Managing Director, State and Local TaxThe Tax Managing Director, State and Local Taxation is responsible for providing written tax advice to clients, evaluating and alternate courses of action to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, recognizing potential tax risks and identifying potential changes in tax policy and regulations. In this role, the Tax Managing Director, State and Local Taxation will be charged with marketing, networking and business development within their area of experience and specialization and maintaining key client relationships.The Tax Managing Director, State and Local Taxation is a critical part of the office’s / region’s Tax Services leadership team, and will act as a source for guidance on complex tax questions and issues.Job DutiesResearchIdentifies all situations when research is necessary, and conducts appropriate investigation on identified topicsAnalyzes researched facts and the sources utilizedPrepares studies of tax implications and outlines alternative courses of action to clientsPartners with other Core Tax and Specialized Tax Services professionals to resolve complex and contentious mattersTax ComplianceEnsures clients comply with applicable authorities while identifying options for minimizing the client’s tax and reporting burdensManages engagements to ensure engagement metrics are achievedCollaborates with Business Development team and other strategic parties to drive sales tax compliance service offeringsTax ConsultingHandles all inquiries from federal and state agencies regarding all tax issues and questionsDrafts responses to examiner questions and challengesMonitors implementations of work plans for tax consulting projectsProvides recommended solutions by combining tax knowledge and knowledge of business / industryTax ControversyRepresents clients before any tax authority on contested issuesResponds to all questions from federal or state agenciesTax SpecializationActs as industry expert in SALTIdentifies cross-selling opportunities with other tax specializationsManages SALT services provided to assigned clientsDevelops tools and/or improvements allowing for enhance the efficiency or services of the SALT practiceAccounting for Income Taxes – SFAS109Prepares tax accrual workpapersASC740-10Understands and applies industry standards, along with firm policies and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements as they relate to FAS 109 and FIN48Recognizes, measures and documents financial benefits to clientsStrategy DevelopmentDevelops new or improved ideas to advance the position of clients, the firm or firm personnel through reduction in taxes or expenses or offering of non-tax benefitsParticipates in relevant industry groupsLeads marketing campaigns and external SALT initiativesOther duties as requiredSupervisory ResponsibilitiesSupervises the day-to-day workload of STS SALT Senior Managers, Managers and Staff on assigned engagements, and reviews work productEnsures STS SALT Senior Managers, Managers and Staff are trained on all relevant tax softwareEvaluates the performance of STS SALT Senior Managers, Managers and Staff, and assists in the development of goals and objectives to enhance professional developmentDelivers periodic performance feedback, and completes performance evaluations for STS SALT Senior Managers, Managers and StaffActs as Career Advisor to STS SALT Senior Managers, Managers and Staff, as appropriateEducation, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or other relevant field requiredMaster’s degree in Accounting, Taxation or other relevant field preferredJuris Doctorate preferredTen (10) or more years of prior SALT experience requiredPrior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis requiredCPA certification or other relevant certification preferredProficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word preferredExposure to and familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools preferredExcellent verbal and written communication skillsSuperior analytical and research skillsSolid organizational skills, especially the ability to meet project deadlines with a focus on detailsNational Range: $157,500 - $420,000BDO is an Equal Opportunity Employer, including disability/vets.
