The Assistant General Counsel – Commercial and General Litigation is responsible for managing the defense of litigation, including commercial, consumer class actions, real estate, product liability, regulatory matters, and other disputes. The incumbent provides legal advice, training, and counsel to internal business partners across various departments such as Merchandising, Supply Chain, IT, Finance, Real Estate, and Store Operations. Regular travel throughout the continental U.S. is required. Principal Duties and Responsibilities Manage various types of litigation for the company. Select and monitor outside counsel to ensure effective case handling, emphasizing efficiency and cost management. Conduct investigations in response to complaints and lawsuits. Provide legal advice and counsel to business partners. Identify legal risks and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Keep internal teams informed of legal trends. Represent the company in trials, hearings, investigations, depositions, mediations, and settlement conferences. Identify and pursue opportunities for the company to recover funds through litigation or class claim participation. Oversee and prepare responses to notices, subpoenas, summonses, and other legal correspondence within the incumbent’s areas of responsibility. Minimum Requirements/Qualifications JD from an accredited law school and a license to practice law. Bar membership and in good standing with at least one state; eligible for a Virginia Corporate Counsel Certificate if not a VA Bar member. 7-10 years of experience in commercial and class action litigation. Strong communication, negotiation, and analytical skills. Ability to collaborate successfully with business partners across the company. Willingness and ability to travel regularly across the continental United States. Desired Qualifications Experience with retail companies. Experience with product liability and intellectual property litigation. Experience working with Fortune 500 companies.
