Job Title:Professional Practice Professor, Open Rank Department:Engineering | Computer Science and Engineering Professional Practice Professor, Open Rank Department of Computer Science and Engineering College of Engineering The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at The Ohio State University invites applications for an open rank professional practice (non-tenure-track) faculty appointment in the area of Software Engineering and Innovation, starting as early as Fall 2026. Position Overview The position will be affiliated with the Center for Software Innovation (CSI) and the Integrated Business & Engineering Honors Program, Software Innovation track (IBE-SI). The Center for Software Innovation (CSI) at The Ohio State University was established by a generous $110M gift from the Timashev Family Foundation, the largest single donation in Ohio States history. The Center is positioning the University and Ohio to be the epicenter for growth in the rapidly expanding global digital economy. It seeks to equip innovators with the skills, tools, and resources to build the digital economy and enable student education and access to the principles and practices of software innovation. The Integrated Business and Engineering (IBE) Honors Program is a challenging four-year program designed to help prepare the next generation of business and technology leaders to operate effectively across business and technical domains, and to learn an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving. We will consider all qualified applicants with expertise in software engineering and related areas, who can teach courses on a broad range of software-related topics. Examples of such courses are included below, for reference: CSE 1224 Introduction to Computer Programming in Python CSE 2221 Software I: Software Components CSE 2231 Software II: Software Development and Design CSE 3231 Software Engineering Techniques CSE 3241 Introduction to Database Systems CSE 3341 Principles of Programming Languages CSE 3903 Project: Design, Development, and Documentation of System Software ENGR 5901 Multidisciplinary Engineering Capstone Design Project 1 - Honors IBE We are seeking candidates who would also be interested in development and teaching of access-for-all courses in Data and in AI, such as Data Wrangling, Prompt Engineering, and Introduction to Start Ups. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to teach and mentor students at both the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as interest and ability to lead curriculum and degree program development. This position is also aligned with the Universitys AI fluency initiative, whereby each student will be fluent in AI as it applies to their field (Experience with AI-assisted coding techniques is desired. Faculty members aligned with CSI, are also expected to participate in a variety of scholarly activities that contribute to the CSI mission's overall success. Examples of such activities include: Meeting with industry partners, individuals, and focus groups to understand the skillset students need for a successful career in their field. Collaborate to develop hands-on experiential learning opportunities (e.g., lectures from industry professionals, workshops focused on application, and student project development). A strong record of mentorship (students or employees). Education and Experience Requirements Required: A Ph.D. in computer science, computer engineering, or a closely related computing field. Ph.D. must be completed by the time of appointment. Evidence of teaching and/or mentoring teams (students or employees) in the computing field. Desired Experience with developing new courses and degree programs. Experience with online teaching and programs, experiential teaching, informal learning, and/or outreach and engagement. Experience with the intersection of AI and software engineering, including but not limited to automated code generation, intelligent debugging and de-obfuscation, AI-assisted code refactoring, neural program synthesis, probabilistic programming, and software testing automation. A record of high-quality research or development in the software area, gained in academia, industry, government, or national labs. Clear plans to create, implement, and oversee engagement with industrial or government partners.
