Superintendent of Schools - Garrett County MarylandThe Garrett County Board of Education seeks a Superintendent of Schools who will serve as the Chief Executive Officer of Garrett County Public Schools and provide strong, visionary leadership to ensure every student receives a high-quality education.The ideal candidate will be an experienced educational leader who can effectively manage district operations in accordance with Board policies, Maryland Public School Law, and State Board of Education regulations.The Board is looking for a Superintendent who can successfully guide the system through the implementation of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future. This includes advancing early childhood education, strengthening college and career readiness pathways, supporting educator career ladders, expanding wraparound services, and ensuring accountability and transparent reporting.About the positionIdeal candidates will:Provide strategic leadership promoting academic excellence, equity, and continuous improvementServe as executive officer to the Board; implement policies and provide timely informationLead district-wide compliance with Blueprint requirements, including CCR pathways, Pre-K expansion, and AIB reportingOversee curriculum, instruction, and assessment; monitor student outcomes and graduation/special program complianceRecruit, hire, support, and evaluate educators and leaders; strengthen professional development and accountabilityDevelop and manage operating and capital budgets; oversee facilities, transportation, technology, and safetyCollaborate with local, state, and federal funding sources to maximize budget opportunities and ensure long-term fiscal sustainabilityMonitor and provide testimony when appropriate on pending COMAR regulations and local/state educational law or policy changes to guide the district’s compliance and advocacy effortsEnhance and build on partnerships with families, community organizations, higher education, businesses, and State and County governmentAddress the unique needs of a rural district, including small school operations and staffing challengesEnsure compliance with federal/state education laws, COMAR regulations, Blueprint requirements, and Board policiesLead the school system through challenges related to declining enrollment and inflationary demandsCriteria and General InformationEducation: Master’s degree in Education, Educational Leadership, or related field (Doctorate preferred)Certification: Eligible for Maryland Superintendent certificationKnowledge: Maryland education law, COMAR regulations, Board policiesBlueprint for Maryland’s Future and rural district challengesExperience: 5–10 years of successful K–12 teaching experienceProven record of improving student achievementExperience across multiple grade levels preferredKnowledge of diverse learners, including special education, English learners, and at-risk studentsProven educational administration and school system leadership experienceStrong strategic planning, fiscal management, communication, and stakeholder engagement skillsPosition ExpectationsThe successful candidate will agree to establish full-time residency in Garrett County no later than July 1, 2026Salary Range: $145,000 – $180,000 annually.
