Summary The Assistant Director of Academic Advising & Retention reports to the Senior Director of Academic Advising and is responsible for implementing, managing, and assessing first-year advising on the East Texas A&M campus. The position serves as a central resource for first-year student advisors. In coordination with Academic Advising leadership, the Assistant Director ensures all first-year advisors are trained to provide undergraduate students with high-quality advisement. This role stays informed about East Texas A&M academic colleges, collaborates with Orientation, facilitates degree pathways in coordination with colleges, and recommends standardized advisement practices. The Assistant Director will serve on assigned committees or work groups to ensure awareness of activities and information impacting the advising unit. Duties & Responsibilities Manage activities related to the first-year academic advising program, including advisor/advisee caseloads, ratios, and student assignments. Supervise day-to-day operations of the first-year advising program. Provide guidance to staff involved in department services and programs. Serve as a Lead Advisor, cross-train in multiple majors, and assume a caseload as needed. Meet with prospective students and parents and provide general University information. Hire and supervise First-Year Undergraduate Advisors. Develop and implement onboarding training, cross-training, professional development opportunities, and ongoing feedback through the evaluation process. Evaluate the effectiveness of advisement and conduct data analysis projects; implement assessment initiatives to enhance advising and case management. Compile and present data-informed proposals and recommendations for immediate and long-range planning for advising and retention efforts. Develop and lead retention-focused outreach programs to currently enrolled students in coordination with division leadership. Coordinate advising assignments with a focus on improving student communication, connections with advisors, and proactive outreach to support retention outcomes. Serve on the management team with the Senior Director and Directors. Represent the department on committees as needed. Participate in developing departmental strategic plans and coordinate operational matters to meet goals and objectives. Develop, implement, coordinate, and evaluate programs; monitor compliance with unit, department, University, and government standards and policies. Provide leadership for the department in the absence of the Senior Director and Directors; supervise and guide a team or departmental sub-unit(s). Minimum Requirements Education: Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience: Six years of related experience. Knowledge / Skills: Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications; knowledge of student information systems, degree planning, and degree audits. Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Ability: Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others; ability to present information clearly; ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality; willingness to work beyond normal hours and weekends; ability to travel. Licensing/Professional Certifications: None Physical Requirements: None Other Requirements: None Preferred Education / Skills / Experience Master’s Degree. Three or more years advising experience. Previous supervision experience. Supervision Of Others Full-time staff, student workers, and graduate assistants. All positions are security-sensitive.
