From high‑stakes capital projects to the daily operations of King County’s active landfill, we’re driven by curiosity, collaboration, and a commitment to engineering brilliance.Let’s build something extraordinary together.This posting may be used to establish a list of qualified candidates for the Senior Project Engineer position within the Solid Waste Division during the following six months.About the RoleThis senior engineering role will be the technical lead responsible for technical expertise, quality assurance and control, and problem solving for Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) from design to commissioning, Engineering Support to Operations for smaller projects, maintenance and daily operation, and project management of non‑CIP projects for the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill, plus engineering support to other groups within the Solid Waste Division.You do not need to be a landfill expert to excel in this role. Our landfill engineers have varied backgrounds in gas collection and conveyance systems, wastewater collection, conveyance and treatment systems, or civil, mechanical, and/or chemical engineering. We provide on‑the‑job and classroom training to fill any gaps.As an Engineer III, you will also provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and scientists, collaborate with capital project managers and other engineers to foster high‑performing teams, and contribute to a culture of excellence and continuous learning where all team members are valued.About the TeamThe Facility Engineering and Science Section (FESS) drives major programs and projects with a focus on safety and environmental stewardship. We offer training, comprehensive benefits, and growth opportunities.What You Will Be DoingLead Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in reviewing and evaluating consultant designs, plans, and specifications for landfill development, wastewater systems, and landfill gas systems. The portfolio may include horizontal civil construction and stormwater projects.Lead preparation of consultant requests for proposals, construction bid documents, and other contract documents; participate in consultant review, selection, bidding/qualification, and contract negotiations.Work with Operations to investigate and troubleshoot engineering and system problems related to landfill operations, leachate collection, conveyance, and landfill gas collection and conveyance systems.Project management and project engineering for rehab projects from conception to implementation (typically $500K–$1M, completed within ~2 years).Develop and implement engineering, feasibility, and constructability studies; make recommendations based on study results.Qualifications You BringBachelor of Science in Engineering or physical science, or equivalent combination of training and experience.Working knowledge of Municipal Solid Waste Landfills, Wastewater Treatment, Gas Collection and Conveyance Systems, or related complex civil/environmental projects on active sites.Understanding of project management techniques and construction planning/scheduling.Experience with consultant and construction contracting.Ability to communicate technical information to regulators, executive management, stakeholders, and consultants.Physical Requirements & Workplace ExposuresThis position requires bending, lifting, walking in adverse conditions, and other field activities. Wear and operate in environments with uneven terrain, inclement weather, and industrial activities.
