Litigation Counsel – Disability Rights CaliforniaLocation: Hybrid Remote (California only) — Los Angeles, Berkeley, San Diego, or SacramentoJob Type: Full-time (Exempt)Salary Range: $113,144.85 - $165,704.18 annually (Band 14, Steps A-J) – Depending on ExperienceJob Title: Litigation CounselPractice Group: Legal Advocacy Unit — Systemic/ImpactReports To: Director of LitigationDescription: The Litigation Counsel are dynamic, skilled leaders engaged in guiding litigation and developing strategies to enforce civil rights and anti-discrimination laws. DRC seeks innovative and experienced leaders and litigators to serve as Litigation Counsel in our Legal Advocacy Unit.Who We Are: Disability Rights California (DRC) defends, advances, and strengthens the rights and opportunities of people with disabilities. We are committed to a culture of inclusion and belonging, recognizing intersectional discrimination and working toward a world where disabled people have power and dignity.Purpose of the Job: DRC advocates for people with disabilities living in California by addressing systemic discrimination and the unique challenges created by intersecting forms of discrimination. Litigation Counsel provide guidance, connection, and strategic direction to selected litigation teams and lead and mentor LAU attorneys on federal and state court litigation and administrative hearings.Essential Functions Note: formatting from the original has been normalized; text remains focused on responsibilities.Identify and pursue novel and/or systemic impact litigation and policy advocacy addressing intersectional issuesDevelop and manage an appropriate litigation docketIdentify and implement major policy advocacy as necessarySupport teams in targeted representation, complex litigation, appellate work, and/or major policy advocacyProvide technical assistance and skills-based training to LAU staffMonitor cutting edge legal issues affecting the disability communityMentor and support LAU staff on litigation or advocacy projectsEstablish best practices for litigation and advocacy within DRC’s LAUAdministrative/ManagementParticipate as a member of the DRC legal management team to help develop the LAU’s strategic directionCollaborate with other Litigation Counsel to fulfill administrative and litigation-related responsibilitiesCo-review and approve requests to commence new litigationCommunity-Based AdvocacyEngage in community-based advocacy and representation of the agency as the voice of clientsPrepare training materials, publications, reports, and presentations about legal work, including litigation and advocacy reports to funding entities, the DRC Board of Directors, and other DRC unitsEducation, Experience, and LicensesMember of the California State BarEight years of practice in substantial civil litigation, or six years if primarily civil litigation in clerkships or criminal defenseExperience in mentoring or supervising attorneysExperience with client representation of people with disabilitiesExperience identifying and addressing clients’ intersectional needsExperience with laws, rights, and services pertaining to people with disabilities and/or direct representation of people with disabilitiesPreferred QualificationsLitigation experience in civil rights and/or anti-discrimination laws, including disability rights and/or race-based inequitiesExperience in the disability rights movement and with the disability communityAbility to develop impact strategies and identify structural discriminationExperience with ethnic or language-distinct communities, homelessness or affordable housing, Medicare programs, education law, or LGBTQIA+ communitiesSupervisory Responsibilities None. This position requires leadership, training, and mentoring of litigating staff only.Bilingual Ability Proficiency in ASL, Spanish, or Asian languages is desired but not required.Travel Requirements Ability to travel to various DRC offices, courts, trainings, and other limited events.Working Conditions Duties can be performed in office, home, or field settings, including courthouses and community-based environments. Regular communication over online platforms is expected.
