SummaryThe main function of a paralegal is to assist lawyers by researching legal precedent, investigating facts, or preparing legal documents. A typical paralegal is responsible for conducting research to support a legal proceeding, formulate a defense, or to initiate legal action.Job Responsibilities Prepare correspondence and legal papers such as summonses, complaints, motions, responses, and subpoenas under the supervision of an attorney or a paralegal. Review legal journals and assist with legal research. May assist new lawyers how to prepare documents for submission to the courts. Assist attorneys in collecting information such as employment, medical, and other records. Attend legal meetings, such as client interviews, hearings, or depositions, and take notes. Organize and maintain law libraries, documents, and case files. Prepare and process legal documents and papers, such as summonses, subpoenas, complaints, appeals, motions, and pretrial agreements.Skills Verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, customer service and interpersonal skills. Basic ability to work independently and manage one's time. Basic knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, and the democratic political process. Previous experience with computer applications, such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.Education/Experience Associate's degree in paralegal studies or equivalent training required. 0–2 years experience required.
