TRUCK DRIVER II - T & D CLASSIFICATION TITLE: TRUCK DRIVER II PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION The purpose of this classification is to drive and operate various size and specialized trucks to transport materials and equipment as necessary to perform work on Transportation and Development maintenance and construction projects. Work requires a high level of skill, dexterity, and finesse and involves performing to exacting tolerances and specifications. Work is performed under the general supervision of a foreman or supervisor who monitors and inspects work while in progress and upon completion. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Drives and operates dump trucks, vacuum truck, liquid AC distributor truck, fuel truck, tractor trailers with various types of trailers including lowboys and dumps. Shall have ability and experience in operating heavy track or rubber-tired construction equipment which requires a high degree of skill and dexterity. Dependent upon the type of truck operated, must be able to perform tasks to exacting tolerances and specifications. Work is performed for the purpose of maintaining and repairing roads, curbs, and sidewalks, within County rights-of-way or easements. Drives off-road, operates trucks in heavy traffic conditions and in confined spaces. Flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs, and cones around project work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public. Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on tools, equipment, and vehicles; maintains, cleans, and secures all equipment; performs daily safety and maintenance pre-trip and post-trip inspections; ensures material and equipment is safely and securely loaded in a responsible manner. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS Operates smaller vehicles and equipment as needed to include dump trucks, chippers, chain saws, jack hammers, hand and power tools. Cuts trees, brush, and rights-of-way; cuts and mows grass; picks up litter and debris from streets and rights-of-way; cleans ditches and drains; picks up leaves. Loads and secures equipment and materials on trucks and trailers. On an as-needed basis, may be required to operate general track or rubber tired construction equipment. Participates as needed in efforts related to inclement weather conditions, natural disasters, and other emergency situations. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or GED; supplemented by five (5) years of experience operating and driving equipment in support of maintenance projects; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Class "A" Commercial driver's license (CDL). Preferred candidate would possess appropriate CDL endorsement(s) depending on type of equipment/vehicle operated such as hazardous materials, fuel; and have experience operating a lowboy trailer, tack truck, or fuel truck. Also, preferred candidate would hold certification as a Flagman. ADA COMPLIANCE Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, or traffic hazards.
