Commercial Estimator

Position SummaryThe Commercial Concrete Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and profitable cost estimates for commercial concrete projects. This role requires a strong understanding of concrete construction means and methods, quantities, labor productivity, materials, equipment, and market conditions.The Estimator works closely with operations to ensure bids are realistic, executable, and aligned with company capabilities.Key ResponsibilitiesEstimating & BiddingReview drawings, specifications, and bid documents for commercial concrete scopesPerform detailed quantity takeoffs for:Footings, foundations, slabs-on-gradeElevated decks, walls, columnsSidewalks, curb & gutter, site concreteDevelop accurate labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor pricingSolicit and evaluate vendor and supplier quotesPrepare bid proposals, clarifications, and inclusions/exclusionsPreconstruction & HandoffParticipate in pre-bid meetings and job walksCoordinate with project management and field leadership to ensure constructabilitySupport smooth handoff from estimating to operations after awardAssist with value engineering and alternate pricing when requestedCost Control & AnalysisMaintain and update cost databases, labor rates, and production assumptionsReview historical job cost data to improve estimate accuracyIdentify risk areas and communicate assumptions clearlyClient & GC InteractionCommunicate with general contractors regarding scope, questions, and clarificationsBuild relationships with suppliers, subcontractors, and GC estimating teamsSupport negotiations as neededQualifications & ExperienceRequired3-10+ years of experience estimating commercial concrete projectsStrong understanding of concrete construction methods and sequencingAbility to read and interpret construction drawings and specificationsProficiency with estimating software and takeoff toolsStrong attention to detail and organizational skillsPreferredExperience with foundations, structural concrete, and site concreteFamiliarity with local market pricing and suppliersExperience working for a self-perform concrete contractorSoftware & ToolsEstimating / takeoff software (e.g., PlanSwift, Bluebeam, OST, ProEst, or similar)Excel and standard office softwareExperience with job cost or ERP systems a plusKey Traits for SuccessDetail-oriented and deadline-drivenPractical understanding of field operationsStrong communication and follow-upAbility to manage multiple bids simultaneouslyTeam-oriented mindsetSuccess MetricsBid accuracy and profitabilityHit ratio aligned with company goalsQuality of bid packages and handoffsFeedback from operations and leadership
