Attending Psychiatrist - Homeless Services

Overview The Massachusetts Mental Health Center (MMHC) seeks a licensed, board-certified (or board-eligible) Psychiatrist to provide Homeless Services. The Psychiatrist would provide outreach-based psychiatric evaluation, treatment, consultation, and systems coordination for individuals experiencing homelessness who have serious and persistent mental illness. The psychiatrist works within shelters, Safe Havens, on the streets, and in community-based settings to engage homeless DMH-eligible individuals, facilitate access to care, and support continuity of psychiatric services across settings. This role is integral to advancing engagement, eligibility determination, and treatment planning for one of the most vulnerable populations served. In addition, the position will involve opportunities for supervision/teaching. An academic appointment with the Harvard Medical School is possible for the appropriate candidate. ResponsibilitiesClinical Outreach and Direct Care Conduct psychiatric outreach and provide continuity of care, when appropriate, for homeless individuals living on the streets, in shelters, in Safe Havens or who have disengaged from the Massachusetts Mental Health Center (MMHC) outpatient services. Evaluate, diagnose, and initiate psychiatric treatment for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness. Provide ongoing community based clinical assessments and treatment for individuals unable or unwilling, due to illness, to present to traditional clinic settings. Support development and implementation of individualized, clinically appropriate treatment and intervention plans. As a member of a multidisciplinary team at MMHC outpatient clinic, provide clinical assessments and treatment to a caseload of individuals, particularly those referred from homeless services. Consultation and Collaborative Care Serve as a consultant to street outreach, shelter-based and Safe Haven staff on complex cases requiring psychiatric assessment or intervention. Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to design treatment approaches for homeless individuals with complex psychiatric needs. Participate in case conferences and interdisciplinary meetings to guide clinical decision-making and service planning. Systems Navigation and Eligibility Determination Assist with determination of eligibility for Department of Mental Health (DMH) services. Support fast-tracking service access for homeless individuals deemed DMH-eligible. Collaborate closely with the DMH Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) and shelter staff on assessments, referrals, and hospitalizations. Education and Supervision Supervise psychiatric residents participating in the PGY-III "Homeless" rotation. Serve as a discussion leader and clinical educator during resident conferences and training sessions related to homeless psychiatry. Provide guidance on best practices in outreach psychiatry, engagement strategies, and trauma-informed care. Program Development and Interagency Collaboration Participate in development of programmatic outcomes and quality measures to inform homeless services programming. Act as a liaison to external agencies, including but not limited to public health departments, developmental services, housing providers, and social service organizations. QualificationsCurrent Medical license in state where employed, and minimum of board eligibility in Psychiatry in state of service required. Experience supporting individuals with homelessness as well as serious and persistent mental illness. Dual certification in Adult Psychiatry and other related areas such as Substance Abuse, as needed. Current Federal DEA and State Controlled Substances Certificates required.
