Unit Secretary - ICU The Unit Secretary is responsible for serving as a receptionist in the Surgical Admitting Unit (SAU). The Unit Secretary fulfills the clerical/transcription duties of the department, and utilizes effective communication skills to enable the efficient functioning of the unit. These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned. Utilize the computer to promptly and accurately look up needed patient information. To inform patient/family members of the location of the surgical patient. Assist surgeon in location of families in waiting room Collaborate with departments to ensure tracking of patient belongings. Collaborate with PSAT to properly label patient hard charts. Upon patient arrival, ensure tracking numbers are assigned and given to patient/family. Serve as the receptionist for the SAU by answering multiple phone calls at one time; taking accurate messages and relaying them to the intended recipient in a timely fashion; maintaining order forms, office supplies, and nourishments as needed in a cost-effective manner; directing traffic during emergencies; and maintaining a working knowledge of equipment Organize and reprioritize work based on patients' needs, available resources, and unit requirements Support compliance with hospital accreditation, state licensure, and other external accrediting agency requirements Review unit/department communication to maintain current working knowledge of job responsibilities; this includes attendance at mandatory in-services Participate in unit/departmental fiscal goals (conserve resources; contribute to capture of patient charges and revenue generation) Assist in the orienting of new personnel by providing constructive feedback and coaching Complete employee incident reports and contribute information to complete incident, medication variance, and infection control variance reports Report environmental safety hazards, including damaged and broken equipment Respond to patient alarms in a timely fashion Ensure emergency readiness and initiate timely emergency measures as appropriate according to role responsibilities Attend required hospital-wide orientations, staff meetings, meetings, and in-services Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care Reports to: Nurse Manager, Surgical Admitting Unit Supervises: None Responsibilities: Not applicable To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Minimum Required Education: High school diploma or equivalent with course(s) in Medical Terminology Preferred Education: Not applicable Experience: One (1) or more years' secretarial experience required; experience as a medical secretary is preferred There are no certifications/licensures required for this position.
