Overview Reading Specialist will work with students as they learn to read or with those who have trouble grasping literacy concepts. Duties include helping students read fluently, comprehend what they're reading, and train them in phonetics, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary memorization. You may work in the classroom with other teachers, or work with individual students in a pull our fashion. Maintain a safe learning environment for students within the scope of the Arrow Center for Education administrative policies and procedures. Supervises and manages student behavior in the classroom, school and school-sponsored functions. Provide a learning environment that is stimulating and motivating to students who generally have not adjusted well to school. Assure the timely completion of all necessary paperwork to accurately record student progress. Prepare periodic and special evaluations through the IEP or PEP (as applicable) for assigned students. Reports significant changes in educational and social behavior and makes recommendations for plan changes. Diagnoses, assesses, prescribes, and evaluates the reading needs of individual students to determine level of need Carries out ongoing assessment of reading needs; writes and modifies the lesson plans as needed; maintains student achievement records Consults with other content teachers, special education teachers, parents and students, advising on strategies and activities that may be used to enhance a student's reading skills Works with teachers to maintains print-rich classrooms Keeps parents, administrators, and community informed about the reading programs/strategies in the school Participates in regular professional development to improve personal knowledge and skills Performs other related work as required Participate as an active member of the Treatment Team. Communicates all appropriate information within and without the classroom orally and in writing. Assist in the development and maintenance of a positive school culture. Maintain proper rules, safety and security of students, providing crisis intervention when necessary. Inform the Principal of all relevant situations. Maintain emergency lesson plans to be implemented during unforeseen absences. Attend trainings and meetings as required. Share/transmit the mission and vision of Arrow Child & Family Ministries to staff and to students and families served. Perform all duties within contract, state and federal regulations, Arrow policy, COA, and NCASES standards. May be required to drive ACFM vehicles, be insurable with our auto insurance provider, and complete Qualifications Master's Degree and a valid (issued) State Department of Education Teaching Certificate in the area required by the specific assignment, or eligible and willing to obtain the certificate within state-mandated timelines. At least one (1) year of teaching experience in special education preferred.
