Job Description

Description The primary responsibility of an Engineering and Building Department intern would be to assist with the oversight of several different types of construction projects to ensure that proper construction practices are followed and that plans and specifications are adhered to, protecting the integrity of public infrastructure by identifying potential problems and offering solutions during construction. These construction and maintenance projects are typically located within the City of Mason, on city streets, within city parks, within city-owned facilities, on private development sites, or on developer-owned sites to eventually be accepted by the public. These projects include, but are not limited to, concrete replacement, asphalt resurfacing, sidewalk/shared-use path installations, storm sewer installation, sanitary sewer installation, general roadway improvement projects, traffic signal installation projects, private development improvements (i.e. new subdivisions), park improvement projects, etc. Duties shall include inspecting, overseeing, directing, generating reports, conducting punch lists, calculating quantities, reviewing estimates, and coordinating work with contractors and property owners. The intern shall monitor activities such as material testing and sampling, including, but not limited to general material testing, asphalt density testing, soil compaction testing, sanitary sewer vacuum testing, etc. Examples of Work (Illustrative Only) Keep notes/records and make reports of inspections. Investigate drainage complaints and construction violations. Help with preparation of final punch lists and coordinate inspections with several departments. Direct and participate in the inspection of large construction projects, including roads, streets, alleys, storm sewers, soil erosion, and water and sewer lines. Inspection of existing city facilities, including but not limited to: bridges, culverts, catch basins, headwalls, large diameter storm sewers, pavements, curbs, sidewalks, paths, etc. Submit recommendations or changes, and acceptance or rejection of field work. Ability to read drawings, take off quantities, and prepare estimates. Ability to accurately measure lengths, depths, areas, volumes, slopes, etc. within the field environment. Keeps the City Engineer or designee informed of the progress of projects. Gathers information necessary to keep accurate records. Takes field measurements, calculates quantities, and records units for payment to the contractor. Furnishes concise and informative summaries for different audiences, such as the public, contractors, or engineers. Checks installation in City rights-of-way, including driveway aprons, sidewalks, etc. Checks development plans submitted to the City for approval as to their confirmation to the city code and standards and informs engineers of any irregularities. Ke RequirementsMinimum Education, Experience, and Requirements The candidate is enrolled in the 4-year degree program in Civil engineering or Construction Management. Possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio driver's license during the duration of employment in this position. Possess a good driving record at the time of employment and is insurable. Demonstrated professional history of sound decision-making. Demonstrated professional history of the motivation required to complete assigned tasks effectively and efficiently. Establish sound working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and residents. Willingness to take on continuing education as it may apply to the position. Physical Requirements: Visual acuity and perception are required. Auditory acuity to hear the cell phone, radio, or communication in construction area. Ability to move in and out of a vehicle numerous times a day. Ability to sit at a computer station for extended periods of time. Mobility to respond to customers in a timely fashion, file and make copies; and Ability to perform physical labor in varying climates, weather conditions, and on uneven ground.
