As a Head Lifeguard for the City of Wichita, you'll play a vital role in ensuring safety, coordinating team efforts, and creating a fun and secure environment for everyone who visits our neighborhood pools. In this role, you'll not only monitor pool areas and respond swiftly to emergencies, but also assist with scheduling staff, instruct swim lessons, and serve as a bridge between the pool manager and lifeguard team. THIS IS A LIMITED PART-TIME POSITION The day and hours for this position: varies 2026 Important Dates The interview process is scheduled to begin in early March 2026. Save the date! Neighborhood pools are set to open Monday, May 25, 2026. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis, and candidates will receive an update on their application status. Candidates who meet the requirements will be contacted for interviews closer to the anticipated hiring timeframe, beginning in March. Bargaining Unit: No Union RepresentationPosting may close at any time Examples of Work PerformedMonitor assigned recreational pool area to detect hazards, disturbances, or safety infractions, by practicing preventative lifeguarding. Recognize and respond effectively in emergencies Enforce all City of Wichita Parks pools policies and procedures Instructs Swim Lessons Assists with daily incident and cash reports Assists with scheduling staff, and serves as liaison between the pool manager and pool staff Participate in regular in-service training Assist in cleaning the facility and related areas and maintenance and operation of pool equipment These examples are not intended to be all-inclusive. At no time should any other job duties interfere with the primary responsibilities of a lifeguard: The safety of the patrons Requirements of WorkAbility to listen to, read, interpret, and apply instructions received Ability to handle chemicals that require a respirator Ability to lift empty containers weighing up to 60lbs up to a 4 ft height Ability to lift and move large, sometimes bulky objects weighing up to 80lbs with assistance Ability to climb steps or ladders Ability to move about quickly and stand, walk, reach, bend, stoop or squat, as needed to perform assigned tasks Ability to work outdoors in unpleasant weather conditions Ability to tolerate airborne nuisances associated with open grounds and windy conditions Ability to climb onto and sit on a lifeguard tower for extended periods of time Ability to physically perform life guarding activities, including techniques of swimmer rescue Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing An employee will not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace. Experience and Training Required Experience and Training Must be at least 18 years old or older 2 years of experience as a lifeguard. Have a current American Red Cross CPR-PR, First Aid, and LGT. Applicants must satisfactorily demonstrate required skills including swimming, CPR-PR and first aid. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship. Preferred Experience and Training A current WSI and/or LGI certification. Offers of employment are contingent upon passing American Red Cross Lifeguarding, pre-employment drug screening, respirator testing, and upon satisfactory evaluation of a criminal record check.
