What We're Looking For: Must be available to work at least 20 hours per week, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed. Participate in weekly trainings based on the needs of the Parks & Recreation Services Department. Successful candidates must be available June 8 - June 12for our Mandatory Staff Training Week, in order to be eligible to work this summer. Possess valid certification(s) by the time of hire. Qualified applicants will have a proven track record of demonstrating the following competencies: Applied Learning: Applying new job-related information in a timely manner. Customer Focus: Ensuring that the customer's perspective drives the priorities and decisions; crafting and implementing service practices that meet customers' and own organization's needs; promoting and operationalizing customer service as a value. Building Trust: Gaining others' confidence by acting with integrity and following through on commitments; treating others and their ideas with respect and supporting them in the face of challenge. Applicants are encouraged to apply before obtaining certification. Additionally, applicants that participate in the City of Napa Lifeguard Training courses are eligible for partial refund after a full summer worked. Part-Time Extra Help positions are not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Temporary and part-time employees are at-will and not covered by the Civil Service System. Some benefits for temporary employees include sick leave, temporary employee retirement plan, and 3.5% bilingual pay if applicable. TYPICAL TASKS Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Works as a team with other lifeguards and swim instructors to ensure water safety. Assists in implementing emergency procedures in case of accident or injury. Monitors designated swim areas to ensure patron safety. Enforces policies and rules. Identifies and corrects hazardous conditions and unsafe practices. Develops and executes swim lesson plans for children and adults of all abilities. Completes and distributes swim progress reports; and providing excellent customer service to all patrons. Performs related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Ability to: Prepare clear, concise and complete written materials, such as educational and informational materials, reports and correspondence; Communicate effectively orally and in writing; Represent the City with the general public; Respond to customer questions or problems; Provide courteous and positive customer service; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties; Demonstrate tact and diplomacy; Make sound independent decisions within procedural guidelines. Education and Experience: Any combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the best qualified candidates. Must be at least fifteen (15) years of age at time of application and have the ability to obtain a work permit. Some related work experience is desirable, such as working in recreation, sports, or a classroom environment; working with the public of all ages; or performing customer service, and record keeping duties. Previous participation in group sports, volunteer activities or a general interest working with youth is also desirable. Special Requirements: Lifeguard: Possession of a valid certification as a Lifeguard at time of hire is desirable. Certifications must be from American Red Cross, Ellis and Associates, YMCA, or StarGuard Elite. This includes Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer; First Aid for Public Safety Personnel - Title 22 (certification must be obtained during your first summer worked); Possession of a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certificate and/or experience working as a lifeguard or swim instructor is desirable; Swim Instructor: Possession of a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certificate and/or experience working as a lifeguard or swim instructor is desirable; Current or ability to obtain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and First Aid Certification.
