Student Assistant The City of Sacramento is seeking a student assistant to gain hands-on experience in both field operations and office administration within the Department of Utilities. This unique opportunity allows students to explore meter reading, customer service, and billing processes while building practical skills in a collaborative, professional environment. Interns will spend time in the field collecting meter data and in the office supporting billing and administrative functions, gaining valuable insight into how essential services are delivered from the ground up. Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department. UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant position should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice. UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California throughout the course of employment. Prerequisites Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. To view our current affiliation list please paste the following URL into your browser: Students must be enrolled in at least: six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students. Majors/Fields of Study Open to all majors, but students in Management Information Systems, Business Administration, Project Management, related fields are preferred. Work Schedule Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday Friday, between 6:30am - 4:00pm. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor. For days when field work is assigned, the start will be 6:30am. Other days, a start anytime between 6:30am-8:00am can be discussed. Additional Work Schedule Student Assistants generally work up to 20 hours per workweek (Monday - Friday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer). Compensation $16.90-18.90 per hour. Minimum Qualifications Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Experience working outdoors or in physically active roles. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel (formulas, sorting/filtering, basic data analysis). Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Comfortable learning new software systems and technology. Ability to balance field responsibilities with administrative tasks. Strong time management and organizational skills. Positive attitude and willingness to work as part of a team. Ability to lift a minimum 30lbs. Familiar with data entry. Customer service oriented. Ability to possess and maintain a CA driver's license. Preferred Qualifications Individuals who are, or have been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth or a formerly incarcerated youth as defined by Government Code section 18220 are encouraged to apply and will be given priority. Interest in utility operations, local government, or public service. Duties and Responsibilities Field Support (Operations) Assist Meter Readers with daily meter read collection. Lift and remove meter box lids (up to 30 lbs.) to obtain manual reads. Work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Navigate city streets and routes efficiently. Potentially drive a city vehicle (valid driver's license required). Follow all safety procedures and operational protocols. Administrative & Billing Support Assist with data entry and verification in Excel and internal systems. Support transfer of meter read data from Beacon to CCB. Help prepare and organize billing cycle information. Review and reconcile meter read discrepancies. Provide general support to Customer Service staff as needed. Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; lift up to 40 pounds, drive a city vehicle on city roads, if applicable; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation. Working Conditions Depending on the work allocations in any given month, work is performed in both an office environment and in the field. This position does have opportunities for hybrid work, as applicable. Students/Employees will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI Work from Home Agreement. The decision to permit an employee to work from home is at the discretion of the supervisor or employer and may, at any time and with or without cause, unilaterally terminate the option to work from home.
