Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway (W&LE) is one of the largest regional railroads in the United States and the largest in Ohio, operating 840 miles of track across Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. About The Position The Supervisor of Signals and Communications position is an experienced, full-time, exempt salaried supervisory role of Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway (W&LE). This position is responsible for the safe inspection, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of all signal and communication systems within assigned territory in accordance with W&LE standards and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations. The Supervisor of Signals and Communications directly supervises, leads, and develops signal and communications employees to ensure safe, reliable system performance while efficiently planning daily work and allocating resources to support railroad operations. This role emphasizes safety leadership, regulatory compliance, emergency response, and accurate documentation of inspections, testing, and maintenance activities. Supervisors work outdoors in all weather conditions with variable and irregular hours, including after-hours callouts and on-call response as required. Duties/Responsibilities Manage safe and efficient work conditions at all times. Efficiently plan work and allocate resources to ensure safe and effective completion of signal and communications tasks. Enforce compliance with FRA regulations, company rules, and safety procedures. Conduct efficiency, operational, and compliance tests of signal and communication systems. Plan, assign, and supervise daily maintenance, testing, and repair activities for signal and communication infrastructure. Inspect and ensure proper operation of signal systems, grade crossing warning devices, and communication networks. Lead, coach, and develop employees to improve technical knowledge, performance, and safety awareness. Respond to emergencies and service interruptions. Coordinate after-hours callouts and on-call response. Communicate and coordinate with other departments. Complete required reports and regulatory documentation. Understand and apply collective bargaining agreements. Working Conditions Work safely at all times in compliance with all safety and operating rules. Outdoors in all types of weather for many hours at a time. Walk on uneven and irregular surfaces for long distances. Wear required PPE for the job task(s). Full Time Full time (salary/overtime exempt). Variable and irregular work hours with irregularly scheduled days off. Employees work weekdays, weekends and holidays on an "on call" basis, 24 hours a day. Travel Travel is required throughout assigned territory and/or system. Must be willing and able to work any hours at any location on the railroad in OH and PA. Relocation may be required Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. Supervisory experience in railroad signal or communications. Knowledge of FRA regulations. Microsoft Office proficiency. Strong communication skills.
