Salary : $121,189.82 - $164,794.83 Annually Location : Santee, CA Job Type: Full-Time with Benefits Job Number: 2026-0204 Department: Engineering Department Opening Date: 02/04/2026 The Position Upcoming Scheduled Salary Increase of 3% Effective July 2026 Under the general direction of the Principal Traffic Engineer, this mid-management, at-will classification performs professional level traffic engineering work involving the design, construction, operation and maintenance of traffic control equipment and facilities to ensure the safety of the motoring public; may provide supervisory activities such as assigning work, monitoring project progress and providing technical assistance; training and evaluating the performance of subordinate professional and technical staff; performs difficult and responsible engineering work; and performs other related duties as assigned. This class is distinguished from that of an Associate Traffic Engineer by the level of responsibility for managing highly visible and sensitive projects, operating with minimal oversight, and supervising subordinate staff, while managing multiple projects. ~This is a non-telecommuting position~Representative Duties The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. Designs, supervises and participates in the preparation of drawings, maps, grade sheets, profiles, plans and specifications related to a variety of traffic engineering projects; Performs complex traffic studies; Assists in establishing priority schedules; Analyzes and implements traffic signal timing plans; Analyzes accident history; Conducts traffic condition and speed surveys, traffic counts and volume analyses, accident and parking surveys and intersection capacity analyses; Prepares traffic signal, sign and striping and traffic control plans, work orders and cost estimates; Manages overload, oversize and annual haul permit program; Prepares and maintains logs, reports, records and schedules; Evaluates the need and justification for traffic signals, stop signs and other traffic control devices; and Performs other duties as assigned. ~ For the complete job description, please go to the City of Santee's website at Qualifications Any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this classification. An example would be: EDUCATION: A Bachelor's degree in Engineering; and EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of progressively responsible and recent experience in Traffic Engineering with at least three (3) years at an Associate Traffic or Civil Engineer level. Registration as a Professional Traffic Engineer in the State of California is required at the time of hire. Registration as a civil engineer may be substituted, provided significant traffic engineering experience can be demonstrated.
